I buy bulk brass from my local indoor range at $3 / lb. Obviously it is mixed headstamp. Is any particlular brass better or any particularily bad? I know many of you just load whatever, but curious minds want to know.

Good to go brass:
Starline (*--* Two Stars with line between them)
Winchester (Winchester, WIN, WCC?)
Norma (Norma)
Magtech (CBC)
Hornady (Hornady)
Independance (*I*)
Israeli Military Industries (TZZ)
Federal (Federal, FC that is not 40S&W)
Eldorado (ELD)
Remington (R-P, UMC)

Shootable, but not as good:
Speer (Speer)
Precision Made Cartridge (PMC)
Company? (HY)
Aguila (Aguila)
Fiocchi (Fiocchi)

Junk Brass:
American Ammunition (AMERC)
Armscorp (ACP)
Company? (NNY)
Federal (FC that is 40S&W)
Sellier & Beloit (S&B) - Mixed reviews, some ok, some bad, usually the problem is related to primer pocket size.

This is from reloading at Glocktalk forum. This is the opinion of several reloader, of course everybody has an opinion.

I load and shoot it all, I store it in big buckets and sort out the nickle and the berdan & other junk.

Speer/CCI/Blazer (All the same, made by Federal/ATK) brass is all good stuff as far as I have seen, it is well made and I would say it is as good as anything else out there.

PMC and Aguila load just fine for me- PMC is Korean and Aguila is Mexican- what I've seen is in spec and no problems.

NNY is Prvi Partisan, imported, and again, I have had no trouble with it.

I've had more "problems" with .mil brass with crimped in primers (in 9mm, really!) those get dumped in a cup for when I have enough to bother setting up the small swager and fixing them.

A-Merc brass is the bottom of the bucket but I shoot that for the places I have to leave brass behind. Out of round, soft, primer holes are off center, flash holes out of position, etc.

So far I have had only minor trouble with Seller & Belloit in that the primer pockets are tight, and they make a range safe ammo that is steel cased washed with brass- looks just like brass, right down to the red primer sealer. Need a magnet to sort it out.

I shoot almost anything as long as it's not A-Merc brass. Federal and Winchester are my favorites for handgun brass. I've had good success with most anything else including CCI, Speer, S&B and Fiocchi.

Same here. Anything besides A Merc

S&B has a rep for tight primer pockets, and they are sometimes, but I don't mind at all.

+1 on the CCI Blazer brass. I like that stuff. I like the Winchester and Remington as well, but for some reason have trouble seating primers on some of the FC stuff in 9mm. No problem with the FC .45 ACP, though.

S&B is actually very good brass minus, the tight pockets and occasional brass-coated steel case. I finally scored a Dillon Super Swage and just a bump with it on the S&B is all it takes...I actually like the stuff now.

Bushmaster:

I save the nickle 9mm for loading up JHP "gold dot" style loads for SD practice, instead of using actual Gold Dots. Speer uses nickle for their Gold Dots so I make mine match for feeding reliability.

I use the regular brass for plain old lead bullet plinking ammo.

I'll keep ya in mind if I get a surplus, though.
