9MM Bullet Question

Hello,

I'm trying out some Berry Bullet's for my 9MM, I'm currently using the 124 grain RN DS bullets.

I see on the website they have 124 Grain FP, HP or RN DS.

My question is what is the big difference between the 3 bullets? I know what they are, but does one shoot better than the others?

Sorry for the dumb question, just trying to learn how the different types work.

Only one I have tried is the 124 Gr HP. It shot very well at light levels. (1087 from a 5" barrel) Loaded at 1.050 O.A.L. it fed well. I had tried it 1.030 O.A.L., but it was a little finicky feeding there.

I've been using the Berry's 115 gr. RN DS bullets for quite a while and like them. I never shot any of the FP bullets in 9mm because I wondered about feeding problems. Not sure, but I know what works so I stick with it. I do shoot their FP 200 gr. bullets exclusively in .45 ACP and they work well, except in my G36. The HP bullets appear to be the FP bullets with a hole in the middle. If you want a HP bullet, I think there are better bullets on the market for that application.

Berry actually has four 124gr 9mm bullets: RN, FP, Hollow Base, & HP

I was not impressed with the HP compared to the other 3 in an off-hand test. The groups were twice as big at 25 yds. from a CZ SP-01. And my Kimber 1911 does not like the HP either. The larger nose diameter causes FTF issues at the ramp.

The HB is handy when you don't want to go into compressed loads. They're not hollow enough to help obturate the bullet, but it is big enough to store another grain of powder. I was really surprised that the HB out-shot the HP in my unofficial test.

Been using 124 gr RN DS (Double Struck in sizing die for more consistency) with great results.

I load them to 1.125" OAL and they feed well in all the pistols I shoot them in (mine and other shooters).

The main difference is how the different types feen in your gun.
Normally the round nose will feed better in most semiautos, the flat points will punch neater holes in paper targets and hollow points produce a longer profile for their weight which leads back to what your gun feeds best with.

Good info from all, the difference between our 124 HP and 124 FP is the nose punch we use. The profile of the two is same, we use the same die. The Hollow Base bullets are the most accurate profile we have. We now double-strike all of our bullets, we will phase the DS out of the catalog this year and bring it to the fore in our literature.

What kind of powder do you use for the 124 gr RN DS? And what charge grains? Light or hot loads? Just wanted to get a feel for what you use, I looked at the local gun shop and found some Unique, power pistol and green dot powders finally.

Could you please give a brief understand of the difference of your 124 grain 9MM bullets that you have? Trying to understand them so i can know if I want to say with the 124 Grain RN DS bullet i got a few weeks ago from you or switch to a different 124 grain bullet you have.

stodd, 124/125 gr RN plated with 4.3 gr of W231/HP38 at 1.125" OAL is my reference load. Recently I have tested Green Dot and Promo with good results. I haven't tested Greed Dot with 4.7 gr yet, but anticipate tighter shot groups than 4.4 gr.

W231/HP38 and Green Dot meters very well (less than 0.1 gr variance out of Pro Auto Disk) due to their small powder size. Promo is a large flake powder and I got occasional 0.2-0.3 gr variance, and it still shot very consistent. Test pistol was G27 with Lone Wolf 40-9 conversion barrel.

Green Dot:

125 gr RN plated with 3.8/4.1/4.4 gr at 1.125" OAL

3.8 gr - 7 yard 1" - 10 yard 1" - 15 yard 2" - Light recoil
4.1 gr - 7 yard 2" - 10 yard 3" - Light recoil
4.4 gr - 7 yard 1.5" - 10 yard 3" - Moderate recoil

Promo:

125 gr RN plated with 4.2 gr at 1.125" OAL

7-10 yard 1"-2" - 15 yard 3" - Firm/snappy recoil

I have only used the round nose 124 gr. 9mm bullet at ca 1060 fps.
