I am loading missori 125 gr lead round nose bullets. I use there bullets for 45,40,357 no problems.
The 9 will not let them go all the way in the throat of the barrell. If I force them in they will not extract. I have tried several depths and it doesn't seem to matter. I have measured and they are .356. I am shallow now and I am afriad if I go deeper I will have preasure problems.
Any Ideas oe suggestions.
PS They shoot fine out of a M&P 9
Thanks for the input

Welcome to the High Road!

The XD's have very short leades in their chambers, which means they're chambered for service rounds, similar to the NATO long ogive bullets. Any bullet with a short ogive is going to contact the rifling before the round is completely chambered.

You're going to have to seat your bullets deeper in the case, and back off the powder charge. If you use the start load for the powder you're using, with a seating depth that will allow the round to chamber, then you can work up your load from there.

Hope this helps.

Steve, another welcome to the High Road! Fine group of people here. Well, except for one or two :)

It would be helpful if you could specify the cartridge overall lengths that you have tried, along with the powder charges.

I'm sure another XDM user will have a "BINGO!" on your situation.

XDM loads

Thanks for the input and the welcome looks like a great site with good input.
I will measure tonight and also try some deeper settings. I got 45,40 down I have been loading 45 for 25 years but the little 9 scares me because they build pressure so fast.

I assume you wish to keep using the same bullet. If that's the case, Fred's suggestions are spot on.

I've had perfect results with Missouri's 147s in my xdM 9, if you'd consider a switch. For $2 more a box...might be worth it.

Good luck, and let us know what ends up working out for you.

Sam,

I am using the 147gr with 3.3 grains of TITEGROUP and a COAL of 1.118. I am getting pressure signs in the primers unlike any other of my 9mm loads.

I am going to try Unique and see what I can work up, but I think the TITEGROUP is a little too fast burning for the heavier bullet. I will back off and try lighter loads, but then the relative error (for accuracy's sake) will be too tricky.

For what it is worth, I have reloaded Oregon Trails Laser Cast RN 124g with an OAL of 1.105 in my XDM 9mm. I put this over 4.5g HP-38. A very nice load.

However, in testing with dummy loads... and referring to my load notes on this caliber and pistol, anything over 1.12 OAL or thereabouts does not allow this particular bullet to fully seat in the chamber in my XDM.

Cheers

I looked into Titegroup loads for that bullet when I set up to load 9mm for the first time. I didn't see anything I liked and ended up going with Win 231 instead.

At the moment, I can't remember the OAL I used, but I think it was right at 1.140". I'll try to check it when I get home.

Now I know why most everyone says consult several reloading manuals. I just checked the Lyman reloading manual and it is the only one of the four I have that even covers 147gr lead bullets. I see now why my formula is way way off, too. Lucky I (my pistol) survived this long.

Speer's manual is very "pretty", and Sierra's is neat, and Lyman's is OK in some areas, but they all don't cover everything. Lyman's is the only one that does a decent job for the 9mm in this case.
