9mm for the wife?

My wife really likes my Hi-Power. Obviously, there may be some issues with carrying a single action.

Someone has to say it: Good trade! Wish someone would swap my wife for a gun:neener: . (just kidding, she's a gem)

ADDED: If she likes the Ruger .357, why mess with it? You won't find a better level of protection with a 9mm or any other auto.

As others have said, let her try a few. That being said, the recoil on my 24/7 9mm doesn't seem that much different than the recoil of my father-in-law's Ruger P series. Both my fiance and I were expecting the 24/7 to be much closer to the .22 she grew up with but that hasn't been the case. She had somewhat of a flinch when she first started with the 9mm. In addition to the ammo you're using, don't forget to consider the weight of the weapon. Some folks are talking about their Hi-powers or Beretta 92s which will feel quite different compared to a 24/7, G26, or XD Compact. Other things to consider are is she able to rack the slide as well as release it? When I was shopping for the 24/7, some of the other 9x19s I tried had VERY tough slide releases. Enough so that my fiance voted them down. I think you should worry less about caliber and more about the construction of the weapon: is she comfortable with larger 9mms like a Beretta/Taurus 92 or does she prefer something smaller like a CZ RAMI, S&W Sigma, Taurus Mil-Pro?

I notice you're in Omaha - I believe The Bullet Hole in La Vista rents weapons (http://www.thebh.com/) but I don't know if they have a 24/7 9mm. I'm outside of Grand Island. If you feel like firing my 24/7, I'd be happy to meet you at the Grand Island Public Shooting Park.

input:

1) that 'ole beat up Ruger' is one of the best used gun purchases...it is very hard to kill any Ruger, especially a good & solid Security Six, Service Six, or Speed Six; ditto for the GP100 series also

2) I'm not gonna say that Taurus produces junk...just keep an eye out...I owned 2 late production 66's; I had between 750-1000 rounds per gun and the mainsprings went out...I fired exclusively double action and had nearly 30% of my cartridges not go off; I would reinsert the rounds and fire single action and they would go bang...the shorter stroke of the double action pull didn't compress the mainsprings enough for proper ignition; I don't own them anymore

3) I have stuck with revos, both 6 and 7 shooters; this deals with speedloaders...I have always had more trouble with 7 shot HKS speedloaders since the bullets sit closer together in the cylinder; if it is a flat point (wadcutters or semiwadcutters) or a truncated cone with a flat point (Federal American Eagle .357 mag softpoints) you are gonna have trouble, especially when practicing fast reloading drills; I only stick with 6 shooters now; you may get 1 more round before reloading, but if reloading is necessary, look out with the 7 shot guns!

My wife likes my CZ-75D PCR the best of my 9MM's. However, for carry, she chose an S&W 642 .38 Spl, that's +p capable.

Great input!

Hi there strat81. So am I understanding correctly, is your finace comfortable with the slide on the 24/7? You are very correct about slide issue's. I know my wife should really have no problem shooting the 9mm with practice. I own two 24/7 .40 calibers and I will have her practice with the slide on those. Since the platform on the 24/7 Pro does not really change, no matter what the caliber, I should be able to get an Idea from the two I own already? This is actually my biggest concern at this point, the slide. My wife is an experienced shooter, so learning to shoot the 9mm should turn out ok. To kmrcstintn, I understand your concern over realiability, but the 24/7 Pro line is a very reliable product. They all come w/polished feed ramps and double recoil springs and a lot of other quality features. Very high quality product. I have thousands of rounds thru my two .40's and not one FTF. I really like the quality of Taurus, they have come a long way. strat81 I may take you up on your offer to come and shoot, it is always nice to make freinds with fellow Nebrakans. The bullet hole is a great place to shoot. I have purchased my last four guns from there-great bunch of people. I shoot there every week.

You Guys have been awesome! Thank you!!!

kmrcstintn, I have just about 1000 rounds through my 24/7 Pro and have not had any problems at all. Other have had good track records with them too. We'll see!

357, my fiance is comfortable with the slide. Took some getting used to since she wasn't all that familiar with a 'service-style' weapon, only a Ruger 22. I don't know if they use a different spring on the 40 compared to the 9. I'd imagine if they did, the 40 would be a little stiffer to accommodate the extra power of the round. If you're wife can rack the 40, she should be ok with the 9. Same would go for actually firing it. If she can handle a 40, she can handle a 9.

The GI Public Shooting park is a great facility. The rifle/pistol ranges are all brand new. If you want to meet, better do it quick before the weather gets too cold!
