9mm hydra shok question

Can anyone tell me with Hydra shoks , if it's better to go with regular , or +P for defense . I have shot some 135 grain standard
Hydra shok loads , but they seem very light in terms of velocity .
I was just curios is it better to go with +P's in these ? Thanks

First Hydra-Shocks are a premium bullet and they have a good record even in standard load. Second is your gun designed for +P loads ? Third if you have doubts about 9mm you ought to go to 40 or 45. I carry 40cal 155 Hydrashocks which in my experience on woodchucks and other animals certainly works better than 9mm.

I look at ammo from this standpoint.

What is gun designed to shoot--rated /recommend +P by mfg. Reliability is priority-
does ammo feed EVERYTIME. Accuracy able to acheive consistent hits- some guns like some loads better than others. When you find a load your gun will do all this --stick with it. Shoot enough rds to test for yourself, me I will test a minimum of 500 rds, and use all mags...gotta have both checked.

I have my G19 stoked with 124 gr +P+ Hydra Shocks. Not much different in recoil in my mind than my previous carry load in Cor-Bon 115 gr +P. Grouped well and fed without a hitch.

Tried using 135gr Hydrashoks in my P95. Was not satisfied with accuracy. Went to Winchester 115gr and things became much better.

I tested some .40 135 gr. Hydra-shoks in some water filled milk jugs and it fell apart completely. The round did not perform well, but that may have been an anomaly.

I didn't care for the 135 gr. HydraShoks either. Not very accurate at all. I've shot the 124 gr. HydraShoks and they work just fine.

Currently using Speer Gold Dot +P 124 gr.

i've found that hydra-shoks seem to work as well in standard loadings as in +p loads...used them in 9mm, .38spl, .40...and believed that they were designed to optimize expansion at standard velocities. having said that...

i think the 135gr and 147gr loadings are a bit heavy in the 9mm for SD...giving up too much velocity...i just feel better with the 115gr and 124gr loadings (either standard or +p or +p+)

I do not like the 135 grain Hydra-Shoks at all. The 124's are more accurate and seem to be more powerful.

The 135 grain Hydra-Shok is one of the Personal Defense line. It is effectively a 147 grain subsonic Lite. Unless you are badly bothered by recoil, use the 124.

Me, I use the 9BP plain hollowpoint. Accurate, reliable, proven "on the street", and less expensive. That way you get more practice with your carry load and more confidence in the reliability of your gun.

i also recommend the federal 9BP (non+p, non-LE) as a carry load. it has been my default 9mm carry load for years as it feeds through everything, is accurate and has a good record on the street

The standard pressure 9BP has been the standard for decades. The olgive is just right and will feed very well in any 9mm I have. My High Powers like them very well.

Thanks for all the info . I think iam going to go with the Hydra -shok 124 Grain loads for defense . The 135 just seems to slow to me , and didnt seem to have hardly any velocity compared to others i've shot such as Corbon , or Remington +P's . The 135
actually seemed much lighter than the target loads i was shooting. I just cant understand how a defense round that seems so slow , with very little noticed velocity can be as effective as more powerful +P hydra-shok with the same bullet
design .

just as an interesting aside...

ernest langdon, a top IDPA shooter (also instructor and gunsmith), shooting a beretta 92 elite, uses a 135gr load in his competition load...supposed to be a great balance of accuracy and recoil.

so what if its slow a .45 is worst slow then a 9mm and it hits hard and does alot of damage.

how do you think deer go down by 115-124 gr or 147gr ? more weight is better i aint worried about the velocity as long as it expands enough and penetrates deep for self defens ei am confident with the 147gr Gold dotts an dmy second choice is 147 gr federal premium Hydra-shok. the +p+ and +p are just as good as the heavy bullet i dont know why people must have the fastest bullet, next thing people will be carrying exploding depleted uranium rounds ?

stop crying and use the bullets you can find important is the shot placement. I dont think the BG is gonna get back up after getting hit a couple times with 147gr JHP..
