What do you keep your 9mm handguns loaded with?

In my case I'm starting to like this new Winchester PDX1.

Right now I carry basic Winchester 115g Silver Tips, I have few mags left over from a bunch I bought to test HPs in my 709Slim. The Silver Tips don't get much attention but they have always been rated for good expansion and penetration. That said I'll like shoot the rest and switch over to a more "modern" SD bullet like Hornady Critical Defense or Winchester PDX1

Hot Damn!......another ammo thread!......
Hey Doc....is someone forcing you to read the "ammo threads"? If not I have novel idea....If you don't like them, don't read them. ;)

I like the Federal HST, either 147+P, 147, or 124+P flavors.

I also have carried a lot of Georgia Arms 124+P Gold Dots, some time back before that it was the Federal 9BPLE (I admit, I read two of the Marshall and Sanow books and they did influence me. Now I think they are an interesting read, but not reliable or relevant to contemporary JHP designs).

I've also carried Fiocchi Extrema 124 or 115 XTPs (can't remember which), Fiocchi 147 JHP, WWB 147 JHP, Remington UMC 115 JHP.

I'm sure there have been others too, but those are the great majority of what I have carried. I liked the 147+P HST best of them all.

I have read nothing but great reviews on this stuff. The expansion is cookie cutter and consistent according to all of the tests I have read. I am using it my 9mm. I just bought a box to feed my brand spanking new G30sf.

147gr Ranger T.

I dont know if they are "the best" but my brother inlaw thats a LEO uses them and they shoot well in my gun so.....

hornady critical defense is nothing more than a gimmick.

That's funny, Ive done some testing on my own and they seem very effective if you ask me.

Ballistic gell, Water jugs, water jugs full of newspaper, cuts of meat, drywall....

It worked very well, especially in .380 and 9mm.

This "what HP to carry" comes down to 1 thing.

Reliability. Find what your gun likes. Every gun is different. I have guns that will not cycle Golden Saber's, some wont cycle gold dots, some don't like corbon.

Once you find something that your gun feeds every time, then look into price and availability. Don't carry something you can't find on a regular basis or something thats out of your price range to test at least 100rds through the gun you plan on carrying.

we as citizens are not the FBI or Law Enforcement. We do not need our Hollow point ammo to go through car doors or windshields.

I know several cops that have to carry X and they don't like it and have often been proved ineffective but its what they have to use.

we have the advantage of having SO MANY different choices of ammo out there. There is no best answer, no 1 type of bullet will do it all. Its not possible. If there was such a round EVERYONE would be using it and every manufacturer would be copying it.

This is my opinion.

I have many guns around my place, and i wish ALL of them were loaded with the same ammo and i could buy in bulk. But the fact is, nothing is perfect.

The Critical Defense is one of the few HP ammo's thats well known to expand in .380 reliably. If it does so well in that weaker cartridge it will be great in 9mm imo.
Id put it in my .40 if i could find it.
Its no gimmick, If it was it wouldn't be one of the most recommended .380 ammo available.

I use 124 grain Speer Gold dot jhps in pistols with barrels 4"+ and 115 grain GDJHP with barrels -4" when concealed carrying.

Around my house I use remington umc 115 grain jhps because I'm usually shooting them at varmints and don't want to waste my premium ammo on them. They work surprisingly well.

I'm not trying to start an ammo war, but to all you people that use 9mm fmj, would you honestly feel safe using it in public without fear of gross overpenetration? That stuff can penetrate to 24"+.

How are you people finding HST ammo? I can't even find WWB JHP on shelves.
