9MM lead bullet

Interesting. I've been using the 9 Cone and have been pretty pleased with it. The IDP #6 is kinda similar (different bullet profile, but similar concept).

Did you have any feeding issues? What type of gun?

No feeding issues at all with a S&W Sigma 9VE. I've been seating them to the edge of the crimp grove and with 5 gr AA #5 it drops the empties right by me. Not a hot load at all. I Loaded a few with 4.1 gr HP 38 and that worked well also.

How about leading with the 9mm. I've been reloading with either plated or jacketed and because of price have been thinking to switch over to lead. I know the 9mm is a high velocity round and have been worrying about the leading part.

I use the small ball from MB and AA#5. For me velocity around 1050 fps with a 125g seemed to be the sweet spot for minimal leading

I use Missouri 9mm lead bullets (.356") and mid-to-high range W231/HP-38 load data and do not get leading in Glocks with Lone Wolf barrels with .355" groove diameters. I get light smearing at the chamber end that comes clean with a few strokes with old copper bore brush wrapped with copper scrubber (Chore Boy).

Reloading tips:

Due to more rounder nose profile of the 9mm RN (SmallBall) that increases the length of bearing surface of the bullet base, I use 1.080"-1.100" OAL as more typical 1.125" OAL will allow the bearing surface of the bullet base to hit the rifling.

Due to substantially longer base of the SWC bullet that gets seated much deeper in the case neck, I use .2-.3 gr less than Hodgdon's load data. I essentially get no lube smoke from SWC loads (even with Hodgdon start charge) which to me indicates very good seal with the barrel to reduce gas cutting and liquefied lube blown out the barrel.

I've been using 4.5 gr of Universal Clays with the 124 gr Berry's at a 1.12 col. I'd like to use the LSWC 125 gr which Universal Clays list a 125 lcn at a col of 1.25 with a min of 3.8 and max 4.3.
So going with a shorter col of 1.045 for the LSWC should I reduce 2 or 3 gr of the start load of 3.8 or just start there?

Due to bullet base being seated much deeper in the case neck, when I did my work up with MBC SWC bullet and W231/HP-38, I used .3 gr below Hodgdon's start charge for LCN bullet load data and stopped .2 gr below published max load data. The loads were very accurate from "my" start-to-max powder charges with very little or almost no smoke.

bds, thanks for the come back. I know you've done alot of work with 9mm loads. I'll start with 3.5 of Universal with the shorter col. I 've been thinking of going to lead but just keep putting it off. Price wise it makes me want to go there so I think my next order will be the 125 gr SWC. Thanks.

I've used the 125 gr 9 Cone, SWC, IDP #6 (the one I started the thread about) and the 147 gr 9MM lead bullets.I have had VERY little leading with any of them. All I shoot in my 9MM and 45 ACP is lead. I like to shoot and I like to reload. I can afford to do much more by shooting lead. I like lead well enough that I don't buy anything else. The only two places I've bought them is Friendswood Bullets and Missouri Bullet Co. Both work well for me.Their prices and quality are compatible but MBC has a larger selection.

With that bullet the crimp groove kinda takes the guess work out of seating the bullet. I mainly just punch paper and like the clean cut of the SWC. I haven't tryed the cone bullets do the punch a hole better than the ball?
