9mm NATO

1 - the NATO load is on the high end of SAMMI spec for 9x19, not into the +P range, but close to it
2 - what does your manual say about +P?
3 - I wouldn't worry about it, but NATO load ammo is generally more expensive than cheap plinkin' ammo, so I also don't run much of it ... if I found it for a lower price than Blazer Brass or WWB, I'd buy it cheap and stack it deep!

Is there a specific bullet weight for 9mm NATO? Or does it just refer to pressure loadings? I've seen NATO for all of them, but I was wondering if the military has a specific loading.

The 9x19mm HS Produkt HS-2000 (Springfield Armory XD-9) is the standard issue for the Croatian military, which is a member of NATO.
So, you can safely assume the sidearm designed for the Croatian military would be able to use NATO spec'd ammo.

Is there a different NATO 9mm for subguns?
Years ago, I got some military surplus, ball ammo, 9mm with hard primers.
It clocked about 1250 f/s out of pistols.
It might have been from Turkey.
Anyone know what that stuff was?

Hirtenberger L7A1 9mm ammo made for the British. I chronoed some myself.

L7A1 ammo, head stamp ’91. Red primer seal. Nato + inside circle mark.

The temp. was at least 87 degrees. Humidity was near 90 percent.

No wind to speak of.

Distance from my chrono was 10 ft.

I first fired 5 rounds of PMC .22 lr from my Ruger .22 rifle as a check. Average of 1175 fps, which is right on the money for my 16 inch bbl. 22. rifle.

I then fired five rounds of L7A1 ammo from my Glock 17 with a Bar-Sto barrel. The barrel has conventional rifling and thus expect about 5 percent less velocity than with the polygon Glock barrel.

The five rounds came out at:

1356 fps
1329 fps
1352 fps
1349 fps
1347 fps.

For an average of 1346.6 fps. Expect 1400 from a Glock with polygon rifling (and that is just what I've read by others who chronoed from their Glocks.)

Now NATO 124gr FMJ can be expected to make 1250 at the most from a Glock 17, even with the polygon barrel. So the average of 1346 is at least 100 fps higher than Nato (and that ain't hay.)

I have the five empties. Primers show no pressure signs. The case head stamping is quite clear and the cases are totally and absolutely reloadable.

The cases landed 8 to 9 feet from the gun. It did kick a bit more and at the mouth of each case is a small dent so the slide velocities are higher for sure.

So yes they do, or did, make some 9mm ammo you should keep away from most 9mm handguns.

It clocked about 1250 f/s out of pistols.

Standard U.S. made NATO ammo flies arounf 1180 fps, so your Turkish ammo may a bit hotter than somen but it may have a lighter bullet, 115gr.

Hot ammo to compare to is the Hirtenberger 124gr +P+ l7a1, which is made for SMGs, flies above 1300 fps and goes up to about 43000 psi.

how much are you guys paying per round for 9x19 NATO?

As I said upthread, I'd be delighted to stock up on it if I could find it at WWB prices

My LGS buys it by the pallet for Winchester Ranger NATO 124 GR FMJ and sells it for $11.99 per box of 50.

Ballistcally, 9mm NATO is comparable to standard 9mm Parabellum European loadings.
It is not overpowered or overpressured by any means for use in any quality made 9mm Luger caliber handgun.
