I went to the range this weekend with a friend of mine. He's been wanting to get a .40 glock for HD, so he rented a G22c. (We've already had the compensated vs. non-compensated discussion, but only the C version was for rent)

Well we had been shooting just fine for a while, me and my 1911, and he and his G22. We were reloading, when we decided to switch with each other, as I had never tried the g22c before.

Well, during the reload process, he drops the mag and bullets onto the benchtop/ground. He picks them up, and finishes loading the mag. I do the same for the .45 and then we swap.

I am now in the shooting lane (indoors) , and everything is just fine....
BANG, BANG, pop,....

The 3rd shot was REALLY soft, and I noticed that the slide did not retract and load a fresh cartridge. It is at this time that MAJOR alarm bells are going off.:what:
(me thinking) what the ..?

I drop the mag, and set the gun down, and wait for a minute. After some time I pick it up rack the slide back, and a casing falls out.

The casing was a 9mm that was now completely deformed! From about the middle of the casing to the bullet end was mushroomed out!:what:

We later realized that when he droped the ammo/mags, there were some 9mm cartridges on the ground (about 2 or 3 of them), and he accidentally loaded one of them into the g22 mag. ( we found a few others where he had dropped the mag)

I don't know how the 9mm round didn't just fall straight through the barrel!

My only guess is the extractor held it into place??

Either way, it was an experience I will likely not forget anytime soon.

Just thought I'd share this.
Always check to make sure you use the right ammo in the right fiream.

There is a post about this once ever 1.5-2 months on THR. Happens more than one would think. This is why I always keep my 9mm far far away from the .40 guns. :)

Take care and shoot safe!

Yet another reason that the 40S&W should be banned from civilized shooting ranges.

I fired a 40 S&W out of my 45 ACP 1911. Was in a rush to go the range and grabbed my 100 round box of reloads, loaded the mag up at the range, and fired, pop! Oops.

A friend of mine accidentally tried to fire a couple 9mm rounds through his Glock 27, but they didn't fire. He thought there was a problem with the gun, then discovered he had loaded 9mm in his .40 mags. :uhoh:

Hey - - It happens, if you aren't careful.

I went to the range one sunny afternoon with Elder Son and his pal. We were having a fine time. The pal had a nifty new Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt and a box of factory ammo. When he finished that, I gave him a half a box of my handloads to shoot. They were packed in one of the old cherry-red Fitz boxes.

We had about six handguns in varying calibers out. The pal begn having trouble hitting a 25 yard target with his BKH - - Long story short, he mixed up the amoo boxes and fired a couple of cylindersful of my stoutish .44 SPECIAL load through his .45. Plumb ruined the brass, he did.

There's just something about .429 bullets wobbling down a .452 barrel - - - They don't really group well a-tall. :D

No hazard, really, in the strong revolver, and function wasn't a question, but . . . .

Best,
Johnny

PS: Yeah, I just realized that this it the autoloader forum. Sorry about that.

I'm actually not convinced that the 9x19 in 40 or 40 in 45 mistakes are all that dangerous. Yep, the case blows out, but in most cases the slide doesn't even unlock, pressure is so low (since a good % of it went down the bore on the wrong end of the bullet!). :D

I'm not saying it's a great idea, but in the world of firearms screw-ups, I think it's a lot less dangerous than many.

It's a bit hard on the extractor, but it's not really dangerous.

I've got a 9mm case that was fired in a .40 barrel on my desk. I picked it up at a GSSF match and keep it to remind myself to be careful.

The guy was actually getting hits on the closer targets, but the gun kept jamming on him.

It really scared me a lot when it happened. After I unloaded it, I disassembled it, because I wanted to check the barrel very carefully.

I got even MORE scared when I saw some dark spots on the inside of the barrel...... until I realized that it was just the compensation ports that were cut out of the barrel..:banghead:

(whew) We finished off the rest of the box without a problem.:D

While I have 2 centre-fire "slab-sided slide guns", they are both .45ACP. Just so that I don't mess up like this...And a Ruger MK II

And just for the record, you can TRY to load .22LR's in a Springy 1911-A1 mag, but they won't stay in......Never mind trying to force .45ACP in a MK II mag.....

Never mind HOW I know...I just know.. :p
