Hey all, this is going to be kind of an obscure question, but I'm trying to avoid having to register on a Beretta forum just to ask one question.

Anyway, I've aquired a Beretta 92SB, one of the ones issued to the CSP in the 1980's. Of course, it came with pachmayr wraparound rubber grips that don't suit my tastes, so I found a pair of Beretta factory grips that I believe are from one of the newer models, 92FS/M9 or some such. They look great, but there's a problem. (isn't there always?)

If I tighten the grip screws enough so that the grip panels aren't loose, the screws protrude into the magwell enough to prevent magazine insertion/removal. This is obviously not a thrilling development.

Now... Are my grip screws too long (do pachmayrs come with longer replacement grip screws?) or are my new grip panels too narrow? Anyone have any ideas on a reasonably convienient place to purchase either original 92SB grip panels or possibly shorter grip screws?

I really like the pistol, but if this is going to be one of those situations where the solution to the problem is to leave it in the safe for the next twenty years while I scour the fleamarkets, dusty parts boxes, and gunshop bargain bins of the world, I'll probably trade it in for a newer model.

Sounds like the screws are to long and You should be able to get shorter ones at alot of different places, even a hardware store or we have a place called Capscrew that carries everything under the sun. You could carefully shorten the ones you got with the right tools.
Should not be a hard fix

Numrich gun parts will probably have some factory Beretta grip screws for a reasonable price, you could send them an email with the dimensions of your current gripscrews and ask if they have the dimensions of the factory ones, or somesuch.

Beretta 92 grips

I had the same problem several years ago. I went to my local hardware store and purchased some polymer washers in the correct size. They went on the outside of the grips which took up the excess length of the screws. It worked very well for me. I had to thin the washers slightly with a piece of sandpaper.

Aha! Looking at the online schematic on the numrich site, I notice part #62 (which they don't sell or describe) appears to be exactly such a washer. These are a standard item on factory Barettas?

All Berettas have a small washer underneath the screws when using stock grips. If you replace the grips w/ aftermarket grips, it isn't necessary. But, with the thinner stock grips, it is necessary. Try some online gun part websites (try www.midwayusa.com and also try a google search - "gun parts) - If no luck, then call Beretta USA directly.

if I may suggest Dave Olhasso's parts for the washers

I too have an SB and some other things you might want are there such as a current 4th generation locking block, replacement grip screws (I don't much care for the SB's thin blade european ones), elite II hammer, a competition hammer spring or "d" spring.

and in the future, I assure you that Beretta forum is worth registering on.
