Hi all, this is my first post :)

Im an English Mossberg owner (a rare thing!) who needs a bit of help.

My 500A shoots high for me. Much as I love the gun, and use it quite a bit, its totally different from my other gun, a Benelli M2, which points exactly where it should.

I was wondering if there's any way to alter the point of aim on the Mossberg? It has a synthetic stock, which may make it a bit more difficult.

I got some very useful imformation on here a while back about jamming on a 500a, and since using that info its been perfect, so I thought that THR would be a good place to ask.

Thanks for any help, and thanks for an interesting forum ! :)

Welcome aboard, Throdgrain. There's a way to do this.

All pumps can be shimmed between the stock and receiver to make small changes in point of impact. Loosen the stock bolt and add a small shim made from anything that will not rust.Place it at the top since you want to lower POI. I use aluminum foil folded several times. Others use pieces of plastic hull.

Retighten and check at a patterning board.

HTH....

Now thats helpful straight away, many thanks :)

If my Benelli is anything to go by a very small amount will make a difference, so Ill do it bit by bit :)

Yep thats superb mate and would do the job perfectly, but I dont know of anyone who's got them over here. York guns are listed in the Mossberg website, but dont seem to have any. Ill keep looking though, I didnt realise they did shims.

You might be able to order them direct from Mossberg, the S&H to Airstrip One ;) might be more then the $5.50 they quote for US shipments. Perhaps worth a call or e-mail:

Let me go through my box o' Mossberg parts. I think I might just have some of those spacers.....;)

NOW you are talking :) I just called Saddlrey and Gunroom, which is the closest dealer in the UK to me, and they dont have any :(
I know Mossberg wont ship overseas, so if you had some you could mail me that would be great just let me know how much you want :)

I just got back from a woodpigeon shoot with my Benelli, it points perfectly, Ive just got to get the Mossy doing the same.

If I cant get a proper kit I shall go the beer can route I expect.

Throd, you may want to measure the benelli's drop and duplicate it with the Mossie. It's won't be perfect, but it should be close.

Dave I assume because theres no spacer at all on the gun at the moment that its probably shooting as high as it will go? So if I put a spacer on the gun (I was thinking of cutting a template from a beer can, I appear to have a few of those lying around ...) its bound to put the point of impact down a bit am I right? Also would the home-made spacer be ok entirely flat rather than thicker at the top than at the bottom, in this picture (surely exagerated) there appears to be quite a difference in the spacer.

The Benelli spacers have no obvious difference in thickness from top to bottom.

There appears to be no Mossberg spacers at all in the UK :(

edit

Looking at that picture Im not so sure now about the above statement. Maybe there should be a difference in thickness from top to bottom as you said earlier.

The spacer has to be thicker at the top in order to lower the POI (point of impact) on the gun. By shimming the top more than the bottom the drop of the butt of the stock will be increased.

If the spacer is the same thickness on top and bottom you are only changing the LOP (length of pull).

There's hardly any difference with my Benelli's shims, but then there's a bit of an angle at the back of the reciever, which I expect is the reason for it.

Never used a tapered shim. Mine never reach from top to bottom but stop in the middle someplace.

Your assumption is partially correct. A shim at the bottom would make it shoot higher.

Well, the beer can idea was a bit of a drama, so I went for the silver foil suggestion. It dont look pretty, but seems to work, and will do until I can lay my hands on some Mossberg spacers.

Many thanks all for the suggestions :)

Well, I've been wanting to try shimming my Mossy for a while ever since I first read about it on this site. I went to that site and 17.95 seems like a bit of money when I could probably do the shim thing myself, so I got off my duff today and got the Mossy out. I used a pop bottle, rough cutting shim stock out of it with a pair of scissors. It was a rather thin pop bottle and took 4 shims to do it, but I would cut one, compare with my Winchester (which fits like a glove), cut another until I finally got it similar to the Winchester. It's awesome now! I'm reinvigorated with wanting to shoot the Mossberg this duck season, and after I'd bought up some 2 3/4" fast steel loads in #3 for the Winchester. Alas, the Winny will still have a lot less recoil and I'll shoot those loads up, but I'm bettin' the Mossy is easier on me now that the stock isn't so close to and tight to my cheek bone. The recoil pad works good nuf that I don't worry about my shoulder, but the way I had to crawl the stock with that shallow drop, it beat up my face pretty good sometimes. Now, there's no stock crawling and it just comes up natural and points like the Winchester. WOOHOO!:D

Of course, it wasn't all smooth. Trimming the excess plastic with my leatherman, I managed to take a little skin off my left thumb. :cuss::banghead: DANGIT, I HATE it when that happens!

MC, we can add drop by adding length. Try a slip on pad over the regular one and see how that works for you.....

Throdgrain,

They weren't in box 'o parts, but I know there around somewhere. I've got a few more places to look and once I find where Mrs Scout hid them (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). I'll let you know.
