I started out the day taking my daughter out to shoot my deer under the Oregon Mentor program. We hiked to a rocky knob over looking a drainage where deer frequently travel.

We saw a half dozen does and fawns, but nothing with horns. I received a text message from a hunting buddy stating his boy Adam just got a monster bear and they needed some help. His son and my daughter are in the same class in school so she was excited and eager to quit our hunt and help them out. The next text came through and stated, bring your quad and some help. We drove an hour into town, grabbed some gear and our other hunting partner and headed out. We found them about 1/2mi down the hill from the bear and Adam was smiling from ear to ear. We followed an old skid trail to within 100 yards of the beast and started to work. My good camera took a dump on me so all we have in the field are crappy cell phone pictures. We took some better shots once we got home.

He was so heavy I had to back down the hill because trying to drive forward would pick the rear end of the quad off the ground!

One happy hunter.

My daughter was not able to get a buck this weekend, but she was a real help and had a great time. Both of them are going to have a whopper of a story to tell today at school.

Could we get some information about the gun he used and the bullet weight? Or did I overlook that? Congrats to both those kids, they'll have bragg'n rights when they get back to school.

That thing is mighty fat. Was it gutted before these pics?

Good for him. It's a trophy for sure. The black bears I've seen here, look to be a third of the size.

Yes, it was gutted before any of these pics. We did not put it on a scale, but I am confident it was 500lb live. It was shot with a 270 using a 150gr round nose bullet.

Awesome!

How much did it weigh? What gun did he use? I assume he's gonna give your daughter some of the meat, that would be the gentlemanly thing to do.

Check post #6!

Very cool, care to share what unit you were in? I have hunted a few units in OR and have never seen anything close to that size. Very nice.

That's one big and FAT bear. Good for him. I'm not much for trophies, but even I'd have to mount that on the wall. What a huge bear for a young man.

That bear is easily 500lbs. I'm guessing live weight around 575lbs as I have one that size full-body mounted in my living room. I guided bear trips in Ontario for years and can honestly say that is a brute of a bear. Did ODNR age the bear? I would like to know the age as it apears young. Most bears of that size are 7-15 yo, but that one has a younger look. Were the teeth worn down?
