If you're not familiar with the term "entropy", it describes the tendency of things to move from a state of order to disorder. This is what happens to your undergarments during daily use. You find yourself tugging and taking false restroom breaks to sort things out or put them back into a state of order. In my experience, this process is aggravated by a tightly cinched belt, and exacerbated by a hard object between your trousers and undergarments on one side. I have been wearing loose-fitting (but properly sized) boxers for a very long time, and the problem described finally taunted me one day too many.
In reaction, I picked up a little-known firearms accessory at Wal-Mart today: undergarments. That's right! This is a review on the undies!
The idea is simple: tighter undergarments should mitigate "undergarment drift" since they hug the body closer and have less opportunity to shift around than the loose-fitting boxers. I had the intention of switching to briefs for a proper home-brewed application of the scientific method but to my surprise, I discovered a crossover: boxer briefs. For $11 and some change, I was off to the races to try them out.
First impressions: EXCELLENT. No more chafing! If you look closely at the photo, you'll correctly observe that I'm heavy-set with a 44" waist. I realized I could trade the "slightly hotter" quality of boxer briefs for being able to walk around outside all day without worrying about the penalty of rash.
I've been home for about 30 minutes and have tried on all three of my IWB carry options (pictured) with the new accessory. So far, I think the switch is going to pay off for more comfortable and predictable all-day IWB carry than traditional boxers. I'll keep careful mental notes about how this works out over the next 4 weeks or so with the intention to post regular updates.
In the mean time, I invite more people to help with the project. It would be nice to get valid feedback from many different body types practicing daily IWB carry. If you wear boxers, switch to briefs and try it for a while. If you already wear briefs (or boxer briefs), try to switch to boxers to see if it's better or worse. Post your progress as you go.
Who would have thought mundane undergarments could be reviewed as a firearms accessory?
