Ok, up until now I've been using my father's kit for cleaning and such but since my parents are splitting up I decided that I should put together a kit of my own so that Dad can take his. I just have a few questions and I am sure this is a good place to get the answers I am looking for.

1.) I need a pin punch set.. I've seen a few sets for about $20 or so that include about 10 different sized punches, but I'm not sure what is considered "quality" as far as those tools go. Please recommend or point me in the direction to find a quality set of punches.

2.) I don't usually do any detail stripping and have not had the need to (so far). Are there any good web-resources on detail stripping 1911A1s and Springfield Armory XDs? Is there a book I should buy?

Thanks in advance for your help, guys.

(Edit: I found this , is that a good set?)

Kuhnhausen's book on the model 1911 is invaluable.

I'd call Brownell's with questions about punches: I'm sure the company offers quite a variety. A sales person could steer you toward the best value for your needs—but don't ever be afraid to buy more than you think you need, because you probably will eventually.

"...quality set of punches..." You don't really need punches for just cleaning, but the $20 set will do nicely. Any hardware store will have 'em. Then just go buy a handgun cleaning kit.
Go here and download a .pdf format manual. It's listed as M1911, M1911A1. Note the need for the provided UN and PW. http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/

well I also plan on doing some wannabe-gunsmithin on a 1911 I have
