All of my elk hunting here in CO with the .30-06 has been with factory 220 gr RNSP loadings. I have no complaints about trajectory or terminal performance.
It's amazing how much more felt recoil the '06 generates compared to the .308, for just a 100-150 fps. gain. I am beginning to understand why the .308 is so highly regarded now that I have some experience loading for it.
That's why I like the 165's in the 308 and 30-06, that will cover a lot of territory. Hard pressed to recover one on a broadside shot 200 yds. and under. Usually just a lump under the hide on the far side, and they shoot flat enough for antelope and open country deer hunting.
