So I sent an email to my congressman, John Mica. I wanted to give him my general support for several of his poistions on issues, but in particular I wanted to encourage him to not vote to renew the AWB. The following is his response to me (hand typed in this post by me, so excuse any errors, please, and all abbreviations are mine).
Dear Matt,
Thank you for contacting me with your comments regarding the AWB. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
As you may know, I am a strong supporter of our 2A rights, and agree that the ban on assualt weapons is an unconstitutional restriction on our right to bear arms. I am not convinced that this ban deters crime or saves lives. Although efforts to limit the possesion of weapons are well intentioned, it is beyond logic and reason to believe that more laws will prevent criminals from ownership of firearms. Americans know that tougher law enforcement rather than more social engineering is the most effective way to fight crime.
I voted against the 1994, the Clinton crime bill, which included a ban on the sale and manufacture of certain assault weapons. This ban was instated for 10 years and will expire in Sept. 2004. I have not seen any statistics that would cause me to vote differently. Please know I will consider your comments seriously in upcoming discussions, debates, and legislation regarding the continuation of the AWB.
Thank you again for contaction me, and do not hesitate to call me if I can be of further assistance.
With my regards and best wishes, I remain
Sincerely,
John L. Mica

Not bad, eh?
