I have an opportunity to trade my S&W snubbie Model 60 for a 642-2. Sound like a fair swap or am I getting ripped off? I want something lighter and hammerless for front pocket carry. I hardly ever shoot 357 anyways.

Edit: 642-2 not 442-4. Stupid iPhone keyboard.

I think I paid more for a used Model 60 than for a new 642, and I thought got a good deal on the Model 60.

My take is like ArmedBears--e.g., a 60 is worth more than any 642 anyday. I understand wanting a carry gun--but boy, I'd save for the (lightweight) carry gun and keep the 60-2".

BTW I sometimes front pocket carry the Model 60, although the 642 is more convenient and ends up in my pocket more often. Both are stock, i.e. extended grips on the 60 and boot grips on the 642. The grips are the biggest difference, and can be swapped for under 20 bucks. If I didn't have the 642, I might get a second set for the 60. I do shoot .357 in it, though, and the longer grips make that easy to do, so I would keep them.

With a Desantis Nemesis, the hammer has never been a problem for pocket carry.

One way or another, having one of these guns has never made me want to get rid of the other. With .357 and snake loads, the Model 60 is a great, unobtrusive trail gun in a little belt holster -- but I really do like that 642. It's just more of a special-purpose revolver.

Save for an Airweight and own both. You can use the 60 for your practice gun and keep it in the nightstand, and carry the Airweight.

I know both revolvers are used but just to let you know what the Retail prices are for each. Since the M642-2 had a lock I wouldn't trade the M60 is it has no lock. If the M60 had a lock too it's a wash.

The M60 new lists for $822 ($635 in my local store)
The M642 new lists for $616 ($475 in my local store)

The distributors in my area have M642-1 revolvers available for $475. Those are the no-lock M642's. If you can I would suggest trying to buy one of those and keep the M60 if it also has no lock.

It's all in what you like more, a light carry gun or a gun that's a little nicer when you actually go practice with it.

Those Airweights kick a bit more.

Personally I'd try to save up for the other one and keep the model 60. The Airweights are plentiful, and show up in used gun sales everywhere.
