The local Wally world will be around 38-40 pennies per round, after taxes, depending on size / brand. American Eagle is what I've used so far.

Looking online, I can't find much better deals on the American / Western made ammo. I don't want to use the Russian ammo just yet, the Russian sites consider it to be inconsistent and I am bad enough at 100 yards that I need all help I can get.

Any good sources for American Eagle or similar plinking ammo ?

Several to try:

Try PMC ammo - loaded to low velocity compared to others, but consistent.

For suppliers:
http://www.ammoman.com/ - I have bought from them, real solid service.
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/ - bought when I could pick up, as I live in Texas
https://www.freedommunitions.com/ - bought from them locally (Texas), decent prices - check the webs on reviews
http://www.luckygunner.com/ - not much from me, but Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) student
https://www.fogammo.com/ - a lot of 300BO, but I have not shot it yet. Real solid service

Edit - corrected spelling of "solid"

Gun-deals.com.

It's a price aggregator site, they don't actually sell anything there. You can sort by lowest price and pick the ammo you want.

I recently picked up a case of MEN for just over 300 bucks shipped. Its German made and has been the most accurate bulk 5.56 I have purchased. I cant remember what website I bought it from but it's sold on most of them.

www.targetsportsusa.com has Prvi Partisan .223 available in bulk. Not USA made, but made in Serbia with fully reloadable high quality brass cases (most handloaders, including me, will vouch for the quality of Prvi Partisan brass). If the American Eagle / similar stuff becomes too hard to get or expensive I would take a look at the Prvi stuff. I've chronographed Prvi Partizan ammo in other calibers than .223 and it's always been real consistent velocity-wise which is another sign of quality ammo.

Others to list on ammo--Wideners sometimes has deals along with Sportsmansguide, Midway, Grafs and Sons, and Brownells.

PMC, Prvi Partisan, Wolf Gold (brass reloadable from Taiwan I believe) have been imports that I have used successfully. Winchester (white box) and Federal (aka American Eagle) as domestic ones. Remington has been hit or miss later and mostly miss apart from their premium but I have seen buckets of bullets deals on .223 ammo from them in a literal bucket.

Bulk Reloaders--Georgia Arms and Atlanta Arms both have pretty good rep and have used both in the past.

Thank you all for leads ! Will definitely look at all of them. Much appreciated.

my fav is prvi m193 (not their 223 stuff) and it's for sale online for the extremely low price of $289/1000. i'm tempted to buy a lot right now

American / Western made ammo

What do you consider "Western" ammunition?
  • PMC, for example, is made in South Korea - about as Far East as you can get. That is, unless of course, you're using "Western" to mean a country that are political allies of the United States.
  • But then if you want to patronize political allies, Privi Partisan, made in Serbia (the people who brought you World War I), would be out since they're no ally of the United States which still has them under sanctions for the war crimes they committed in Bosnia and we actually bombed them in 1990's.
  • And as far as MEN (Metallwek Elisenhutte Nassau), it was acquired in 2007 by CBC (Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos), a Brazilian company.
If you want to make a political statement with how you spend your money then you should probably just buy American. If you don't care about continuing to pay Americans to make stuff so they can have a job to buy whatever it is you make (or to pay your Social Security if you're retired) then let the free market rule and by all means chase the lowest price you can find regardless of where it's made.

Not Russian.

No political statement, and I usually buy Federal. But I am also willing to try other brands.

I am primarily trying to avoid Russian made ammo because it's not very consistent in performance. It's no big deal when shooting a Glock at 25 yards (although I still prefer Federal Aluminum over TulAmmo) but at 100m, there's less room for an error that's not of my making. I've only started shooting long guns regularly earlier this year and I need all help I can get, which means reasonably good ammo.
