A Gripe About Some Concealed Carry Laws

one thing I can't figure out is the requirement of some states to immediately inform police you are armed, who then proceed to immediately disarm you.

in my mind you should only have to inform the officer if the officer requests that you step out of your vehicle or home (with reason to request it) and you willingly comply.

Or Inform only on the Officer's asking if you are armed.

also the Immediate standard Reaction of police to Disarm you when you let them know even if it's just to let you know that you have a bad tail light.

I don't see that as a prob, Its much better to inform them up front, then it is to have them see a gun and draw on some one.

Texas has a few ‘blanket restrictions’ but not too bad. I won’t ignore them as I don’t want to lose my guns or my CHL. My big concern is doing it by accident! My rig is quite comfortable to the point that I forget that I am carrying it half the time.

Read what I said again, you misunderstood.

In CA the officer can disarm you if they choose too( you have no choice) I've never heard of a 1st hand account of anyone being disarmed that didn't do something stupid. Now I'm sure it does happen.

Oh, and there is an Oklahoma Rifle Association, but the NRA does most of the lobbying here. Sometimes they even disagree on some positions.

When I was a kid we walked to school.

Don't kids walk to school anymore?

Is every kid in American driven to school?

Gripes? School?

Sheesh...that's nothing.

Check out Georgia's restrictions!

GFL holders are exempt from the prohibition on possessing a gun within 1000' of a school if they're in their car and picking someone up, just so you know. The OP would be ok if he was in GA instead of OK.

Many of the laws that you point to have been changed effective July 1st, BTW. Are you helping to change the laws in Georgia? If you own guns and live in GA, I sure hope your doing your part. Check my sig line.

I'm fairly certain that SCOTUS has upheld this practice so it is far more widespread than just in CA. I personally have heard of MANY instances where people were disarmed while not doing anything stupid nor breaking any law, but for officer safety during a casual tier 1 encounter with LE.

They're not going to frisk you at the school door if you were to walk in and I can't imagine any situation where you would be compromised unless you actually had to use it.

I'll second or third the poster who said this was a bad idea. It's one thing when breaking the law is a class C misdemeanor, but this is usually a felony. And of all places to "test" the law, a school isn't one of them. Emotions run very high when anything involves children. Though you may be completely benevolent in your intentions, you'll still probably wind up on the evening news as, "the father who brought a gun into school when picking up his kid;" which in itself, is not a bad statement, but read it like an anti and you look like the next Dylan Kleabold.

I think guns should be allowed anywhere unless alcohol is being served.

The safest place for my weapon is on my person.

I also wish everyone would start carrying their guns in the open.

It's nice to know who not to "piss off". I prefer not pissing off anyone but I would also like to advertise to the criminals out there how many of us won't allow ourselves to be a victim.

Pyle is right. There is no valid reason for any of these restrictions. Some states have all kinds of stupid rules about govt buildings, parks, schools, sporting events, restaurants, bars, churches, buses, parades, hospitals, etc. Its all just asinine.

In many states the myriad restrictions make carry almost impossible if you don't have your own car to leave the gun in when you go to places where you can't carry it. In another thread I saw a summary of a man's first day with a permit - take the gun here, leave it in the car to go there, put it on to go to that place, take it off to go to this place. He put his gun on and took it off more times in one day than I do in a week.

Even here in the idiot land that is NJ the only restriction is school property. We are a gun owner's hell but these other states, with all thier stupid restrictions, actually make us look good.

Either you are straight enough to be trusted with a gun or you're not. Its that simple. Where you go with it shouldn't matter. As a cop, I can carry anywhere I go. That should apply to permit holders as well.

You walked 10 miles (one way) to school?

Who feels safe enough to let their kids walk to school.

I don't know about your state - but Texas has a bunch of child rapist running around. My CHL - and my .45 take my kid every day.

** EDIT **
failed to mention another score for the good guys in Houston - robber stuck a gun in a CHL holders back. the robbery victim did comply and give up his wallet. The robber then proceeded to walk off - only to turn around and point his gun at the CHL holder again. This time, the robbery victim did pull his weapon and put more than one round in the criminals chest. The robber did move on the meet his maker.

Pyle, can you park down the street and leave the gun locked in the car? Or is there one of those "within 10 miles of a school" things?

That might be a solution - certainly worth looking into. The law doesn't have any type of distance requirement - only one of those "on school property" requirements.

Can you park across the street? :)

I disagree completely. Here in MA you can carry in bars or anyplace alcohol is served. You just can't drink. They have a BAC limitation just like driving, except it's lower (.02? I don't remember). That's the way to do it.
