So about a week ago, we received an announcement of a new member of our staff (we get these as people join the org along with a bio). This gentlemen was fresh from NY/NJ, former NYPD, former Secret Service and private security...very cool. Well being the former NY'er in the org and now a 7 year Seattle native, I went to see him to welcome him and help acclimatize him.

When we got to the subject of guns, imagine his thrill going from there to HERE with our CC and Open Carry laws. He asked about ammo and I said "You can buy it online or in a store". His jaw dropped. He recounted times as a Federal Officer being unable to get ammo in NJ without the right papers.

Basically, it was a happy story on many fronts but in keeping with this forum, the handguns part was very cool. He and I will be going shooting in a few week. LOL...He was hired Friday, flew in Sunday, started Monday and now he is flying to Europe with his boss...talk about hitting the ground running.

True story, cops.....

A patrol officer I work with on my security detail told me he can not buy a handgun the same day as a regular CCW holder with his state LE certification  .
The cop does not have a valid CCW but can't buy handguns w/o a formal waiting period.

That's right boys, here in NJ we still register handgun ammo! The feds abandoned the idea in '86 but we still do it. An you need a NJ gun permit to buy any kind of ammo here.

Visited New Jersey once. I thought it was funny that I, as a Michigan resident, could get a handgun purchased faster in NJ than a NJ resident could. Granted, I couldn't take possession of it until I got back to my home state FFL, but it wouldn't have taken months of red tape and waiting and background checks. I still kinda regret not buying the Remington 1911 (dated 1918) I fondled when I was there.

Why do NY & NJ put up with this?
I just don't understand.

In WI our state Senate & Assembly passed concealed carry 3x in the last 10 years.
The first 2x the democratic gov vetoed it.
In 2012 we voted in a gov who promised to sign it. - he did.
He also signed Castle doctrine legislation.

Thank you Gov Scott Walker!

When I first started as a state peace officer in NYC, I could go into a gun store and walk out with a gun solely on my shield and ID card. Forty years later, just before I retired, it took a week or so to get approval from a state police registry office in Albany.

Retired in '09, moved to CT, and felt bad for NYS. Now I feel bad for CT.

Moving to OH, not for any gun related reason though. But it will be nice to be in a reasonable state again.

NJ gun control and oppression goes back decades and generations. Anti-gun mentality is firmly entrenched in politics, the media, religious leaders and the population at large.

As for New York, the Sullivan law dates back to 1911 and I have not heard anyone trying to challenge the law or have it rescinded. It wasn't until 1967 when Mayor John Lindsay of NYC signed into law the registration of all rifles in New York City.

Come on, even in Illinois I can walk into any gun place and buy ammo.

Just had to show that danged FOID card. One of the reasons I moved from that state was their stupid gun laws. About 1 day after I got my Alabama Driver's License I walked into the Mobile County Sheriff's office. About 20 minutes and 20 bucks later walked out with my CCW. Which whjen I left Illinois, was impossible as there was no carry whatsoever.

At least they stopped being the last hold out state that had none.

Sounds a lot like when I moved from California (Los Angeles) to Arizona. Going from the torment of asking permission, background checks, waiting periods, and gun registration. Then finding out that registration in AZ is prohibited by law and all it takes to buy is completing the 4473, paying and receiving the gun… About 15/20 minutes.
