Last night on the 4th of July, this monster got hit while crossing the road. He was no doubt heading to get a drink of water from the creek which was nearby. The driver that hit him had no chance to stop and hit the bull dead center and totaled his full sized truck.

What a waste. After spending years eluding every predator in the state, he meets his end crossing the road. This big guy never got a chance to breed this year  nor did any hunter get a crack at him. The bases of his antlers were 18" around.

Hopefully, he has a big brother lurking out there to carry on in his absence.

You can take road kill here also, you just gotta get authorization which is almost automatic. You'd need a lot of friends to get this boy in any vehicle.

I saw a big bull like that dead in the highway median on I-70 once, and there was a guy on top of it frantically trying to saw its head off before a trooper caught him. It had a magnificent rack too.

Whoa!

IIRC, I think in Colorado, a road kill will count against your tag, if you have one; supposed to prevent the... "This is the one I shot, officer, and it's tagged. Those two I hit with the truck"... type excuses.

Elk

This is in Utah, in Big Cottonwood Canyon. About a 45 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City. I checked it again last night, with the hot summer temps it was already going bad.

I would love to get a tag in Utah. I certainly believe he came from there, go south a bit more - down around the Utah/Nevada border west of Beaver and they have a ton of 600 class elks.

It is a waste when any animal gets hit unintentionally by a vehicle. Just because this one might have made somebody a nice trophy doesn't it make it more of a waste. As for not breeding this year, no doubt he got to breed last year. Any time you are killed, you won't get to do anything else in the future.

Look at it this way, he isn't going to get a chance to kill any of his bachelor competition either that would likely make fine trophies as well.

countertop - he was killed in a canyon along the Wasatch front. 45 min. from downtown Salt Lake City

sbarkowski1 - Yeah they guy driving the truck was OK. He was wearing his seat belt and not speeding.

Road Kill

In Wyoming any deer killed do to a vehicle/animal collision must be left where it fell. My father-in-law will have two or three carcasses in front of his house at any time during the year. The animals must be left to rot. Almost criminal.
