A hunters back-up.

:what: I've been planning a three day hunt for several months now. I live in Greenville, SC and several of my hunting buddies suggest that I carry a back up weapon. Namely a handgun. We have been planning too hunt deer in a primitive camp/ hunting area hunting mainly from ground blinds.

:confused:My question: I only own a Glock 9mm and a 357 mag. Which would be better too carry. All my buddies have 41/ 44mags. I know that it's illegal too hunt with a 9mm, but I would only think that the Back-up would be for the two legged predator. I'm pretty comfortable with either gun but the 9mm is my favorite. The 357 has more power thou. What would be better?

I'm not sure, but some hunters are very possessive of the area's that they hunt. We are planning too break up into two groups (2 people per group) with the camps about 10 miles apart. My hunting partner and are pretty good buddies, but we are not sure if there would be other hunters camping in our area. Just don't want some CRAZY Deliverance tip if S*%!.
 
How many times have people in that area been accosted by thugs ?

Would your hunting rifle be more powerful than your handgun(s) ?

Wow....If you are that concerned about a confrontation that you need to carry extra weapons to defend yourself, you need a different place to hunt. Taking a weapon in anticipation of a confrontation will only escalate the situation.........
 
Maybe you and your buddy and the others could have some conversation specifically about how to address such a confrontation in a manner that protects your rights but minimizes the possibility of gun play. Maybe exploring some option like carrying cell-phones or radios to summon (or appear to summon) assistance would be helpful. Might also help to "pre-determine" those conditions under which the prudent thing to do is to retreat, and the method to use to accomplish a retreat.

Point well taken, I'm on the phone now trying too get more information about the Hunting area. All I know is that it's a WMA hunting preserve with primitive camping site. It's in a mountainous part of the state( NC, GA, TN) area.
 
Well since it is ilegal to hunt with the 9mm in your state I believe I would go with the 357. I do agree with above posts however going with a plan of retreat is better than going in with plan of defense. You never know they could be more concerned with black bears and hogs for which Idefinitely would prefer the 357. Good luck and have a safe hunt.
 
Thanks guys, Black bears are a concern but not on the top of the list. But i think that me 30/30 can handle anything else. I think that my buddies are just paranoid. I think that I'll be okay, I won't leave any food out and manage the trash that we accumulate. That should eliminate the predators or at least minimize them.
 
I carry my primary hunting rifle, and my CCW for defense or finishing shots. Just as an FYI, I also always carry a spare (back-up) hunting rifle, which I leave in the truck or 5th-wheel. Can't imagine driving 3 hours to hunt, and find a broken X that knocks me out of hunting.

I'd carry a back-up gun too!
Especially if I didn't know what state they are taking you hunting in!

I carry my 1911 .45ACP everywhere. As well as going hunting. Never know when you might stumble upon a camp of Zombie Pot farmers armed with shotguns and AK47's
 
Just kidding about the zombie part... That is a good idea to carry a pistol. Id spring for the 9mm and a extra mag. nothing screams authority like 15 rounds and slaming another clip
 
is that a 3 inch barrel .357? Id think the 9mm will be close to that .357 setup in terms of power. Most of that extra powder is not used in a .357 barrel that short.
 
A ported .357 shot at anything less than arms length (such as: "high ready") may be quite a surprise for the shooter, especially in a low light situation. Just food for thought.
 
If you're going to carry one make it the .357. Otherwise the warden will think you are hunting with the 9mm and very likely write you an expensive ticket. And we always carried a handgun when hunting in VT. But it was in case we had the opportunity to drop a deer that was really close.
 
Rehearse or talk about your tactic in case "someone" happens.

if your friend has a handgun - you use your rifle as
a complement to that.....
 
I would rather carry a few more rounds for the rifle in place of the weight of the handgun. a rifle can do everything a handgun does and more, even delivering that "finishing shot". pack light and remember anything left in camp is vulnerable to theft.
 
I'd take the 357. If you CCW there's no reason to stop because you're hunting. The 357 will be a little better for hunting purposes should that need arise. A rifle can't do everything a handgun does. I can hit a moving target @ < 30' a lot more easily with a handgun than a scoped bolt-action.
