Last week I was in the local gun store when they got a order of shotguns.

Right away I liked the short mean look of this thing.
It's a Mossberg Maverick. 12 Ga, 18.5 inch barrel, 3 inch cylinder bore.



I came home, got a spare BSA Red Dot and Streamlight TLR-2 laser light.
Went back to the store and put the lights on the gun.
Then said, I'll take it.


The only catch is some months back I tore both my shoulders. So it will be months before I can shoot much more than a 22.

Saturday, three ladies were shooting at my house. I asked for volunteers to shoot the Maverick.
Two ladies shot some #8 shot and 00 Buckshot.
Both ladies liked the gun and were deadly with it.

I'm a bit leery of budget O/U and SxS shotguns.

I know you said you didn't get the chance to shoot it, but based on your observations, how did it pattern? Do both barrels have a decent POI/POA?

I wouldn't mind a decent O/U on a beer budget, and I've seen the Maverick online, and own the Mav 88. This looks like it would be a nice companion.

The evening I bought the gun I sighted in the laser to the iron sights at about 25 yards (easy way to sight in a laser without firing a shot).

Then I sighted in the Red Dot to the laser dot (another easy way to match both sights).

The target the ladies shot was a 12 inch round steel plate, at about 19 yards.

The ladies used the Red Dot sight but I had the laser turned on also so I could see the laser dot was centered when they fired.

Both the #8 shot and 00 Buckshot covered the steel plate well, with the Buckshot ringing and swinging the heavy plate. Both barrels hit the plate solid.

If we get a chance I'll ask the ladies (or other friends) to do a good pattern job with the gun. I know other friends that would like to shoot it.

In the mean time, I had a doctor's visit yesterday and it looks like it will be months before my shoulders can take any recoil.

Maverick

The Maverick is a good gun for the money. The early pumps had some problems, but I have not heard of anything else. They are sub-brand of Mossberg. It may not pattern like Citori but it will do a decent job for the money,

That sucks about your shoulder. I'd hate to have to sit and wait before I could fire a new gun.
Sounds like it'll be accurate enough for HD range. Is it threaded for chokes? Or is it a fixed choke? I see they are either IC/Mod, or cylinder bore, just wondering the the cylinder bore was threaded, and which one you bought.

Just wondering if it could pull double duty for quail, pheasant and such. The 18.5" barrels would make that a sweet brush gun for lower Michigan hunting where we are restricted to shotguns.
Is there a barrel selector or does it fire one barrel, reset the hammer, then fires the other on the next trigger pull?

No screw in chokes.

No barrel selector. Just two quick trigger pulls.

I don't know what I'm going to do with the gun. I've got several 8 shot 12 ga pump defense guns around the house.

I may put the Mossberg at the back door for a check a noise in the back yard night time gun, since it is laser/light equipped.
Or I might use it for a car gun.

I want to see how it handles slugs to.

I'd love one of those on the cheap.

Sling swivels, a couple rounds on the sling and confirmed barrel registration would get me to leave the 590 at home on shotgun accompanied walks in the mountains. Keep them Mexican Grays off my bitches when they're in heat. And keep the rock salt outa my 590 to boot.

I kind of like the looks of this for a tramping-around-in-the-woods gun, a companion for when I'm not hunting, but would like something for protection or to grab a shot at a varmint.

It looks like it could handle inclement weather and it it got scuffed up a bit, it would just add character. I'd like to see one in person, and maybe talk myself into taking it home.

Just occurred to me that it would be ideal for leaving out at the trailer house on my son's farm. I could bring back the 'better' gun I have out there now.

I always wondered about a double O/U for the job and now that I see one, I just might look around the Usedd market for one!
I wondered about a Bolt action 12 ga cut down to 18"
I know the action would be slow but there is 3 in the magazine and one up the spout...

As a rule of thumb, a cylinder bore 12 ga spreads about a little more than a inch every three feet.

#4 Buckshot at 21 feet from a laser equipped Remington 870. (across the room) (and a slug)

M2 Carbine

Pretty nifty looking; definitely has a very rugged utilitarian appearance to it. Kind of reminds me of a short barreled O/U Beretta use to make a number of years ago.

The police shotguns I'm familiar with (imp cyl, 18" barrel Mossberg or Remington) all gave very similar patterning. The spread was one inch per meter from the muzzle. The demos we did for new shooters were simple large white squares of paper on target stands - each one directly behind the other at 3 yards, 7, 15, and 25 yards. They very quickly showed the spread (and if you set things up just right, would show any rise or fall from the line of flight....).
