A little help from my Milwaukee area friends....

I'm looking for a decent place to shoot.

My son is attending grad school at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and lives about a mile south of the campus. Do any of you Milwaukee area shooters know of any reasonable ranges or other places to shoot (primarily handguns) in that part of the world? I'd appreciate your help.

The Shooter's Shop is the best indoor range in the area, IMHO. It costs about $10 to shoot. The address is:

From the UWM area, take I-43 southbound.
At the Marquette interchange, you will go west (right) on I-94
Take the 84th Street exit and go left (south).
The sign is not very prominent.
The other place is Badger Outdoors, but I have seen poor gunhandling in the store (not the range). From what I hear, they also only pretend to support the CCW movement, so I prefer not to spend my dollars there.

Probably not quite what your are looking for but something you should check out is Kenosha County outdoor ranges. They are south and a little west of Milwaukee metro. They have trap / skeet in one area. 50-100-200 yard handgun - rifle range just down the road and a seperate blackpowder - cowboy action range.

It is about 30-60 minutes from Milwaukee but the prices are reasonable and the ranges are ok. They have range safety guys wandering around the rifle-pistol range and I have not heard of any real problems.

For indoor ranges, The Shooters Shop and Badger are pretty much it, unless you want to go to the suburbs. In that case, you've got Fletchers in Waukesha and Jays in Menomonee Falls.

Plainsman, if he is into clay target shooting at all have him give me a shout. Now that all of the hunting is done I will resume my consumption of massive quantities of shotshells. I shoot pistol at the same club as shotgun shooting (Racine, about 50 minutes south of the campus) but in the winter months range hours are kinda sparse. There is an indoor pistol tange in Racine too, far north side, that is pretty nice but it would be a 45 minute or so drive for him. If he needs directions and/or contact info holler.

Croyance, what "poor gunhandling" have you seen at Badger? I go in there quite a bit and every time I've had someone behind the counter hand me a gun they have been very professional and safe about it... Also I've spent quite bit time talking to the guys working there and can asure you that what you've "heard" about them and the CCW movement isn't true...

I was just at Badger this weekend...

... and I saw NO sign of unsafe handling, either in the store or on the range. And they definately seem to be behind the CCW efort (the WCCA collection jar was right out front on the counter)...

Fairly good facility, reasonable price ($8 per person/all day). Will still check out Shooters next time I do a range day...

what "poor gunhandling" have you seen at Badger?

Employees sweeping a room with a display gun. Allowing customers to do the same. Multiple times.
If it hasn't happened when you were there, good.
If they are really behind the CCW then what I heard was wrong.
