im not sure if this is the proper forum to post this question in, but you expert collecters must have some idea as to an answer so here goes.

I'm looking at buying a mosin nagant. i can get one all matching numbers and in excellent condition. one excuse im using to buy the rifle is that the price would eventually be going up on it.

but i want to shoot the rifle with a scope, which for the vintage look mount i want would require drilling into the stock. would that absolutely kill any kind of future value? because itd be cheaper for me to get one with no matching numbers and ruin its value, and still have it shoot just as well.

so to sum up: would drilling holes in the stock for the scope ruin what value i gained by buying a matching numbers?

thanks for the help,

Heck they're cheap enough: Buy Two :neener: . Buy one that is in pristine condition and with all the same #'s and keep it the way it is. If you're going to go all out Bubba with one, you might as well make sure it has different #'s on it and it is already pretty well worn out. There is a difference between bubba-fying and sporterizing There is a mount out there that requires no gun smithing. It is a rail that replaces the rear iron sight just by sliding out and replacing a single pin.

Personally I think it would be pure sacrilege to go out and by one with matching numbers just to drill holes in it.

I am of mixed feelings on this: A matching numbers gun (of which I have two) will run you something like 90 bucks. For 90 bucks, is it really a big deal to drill holes in the stock? I mean, at some point Mosins are probably going to run out, but I think there are enough of them floating around to keep future prices pretty low. I typically am against doing permanent modifications to a mil-surp, but in this case, I say buy two, drill one and leave the other alone.

i wonder... my sks has the number stamped on the stock, do these mosins? or could you swap stock and still be all numbers matching?

and where could i find one of those non stock drill scope mounts, ive looked and looked and cant find them.

thanks again for the help guys

If you're going to drill into the stock you could always buy a crap-o stock at a gun show and use that. As far as the kit goes I would check shotgun news. The vendors that sell the surplus rifles in there may have one. You could also check tapco.com, aimsurplus.com, or gunbroker.com.

About the installation of the sight, I would recommend that you use a drill press to make sure your holes are straight. There's nothing more frustrating than having a nice looking scope on a good rifle that doesn't shoot straight. If you don't have a drill press, you could either rent one from an equipment rental company, or buy a small table top version at a pawn shop. They're a dime a dozen and will save you lots of headaches. Just my .02

Chromed Mosins?

I saw on Classic Arms' site http://www.classicarms.usthey've chromed some Mosin 91/30s and some M44s. They do look rather nice to me... is there any collectible value in a Mosin that someone dipped in chrome like this? I think they'd look pretty nice, but is a permanent mod like that kosher? I like to collect these kinds of thing, but mine is a casual interest, I mean I want an old rifle I can go out and shoot cans with on the weekends or whatever else might need shooting, and I like the historical aspect, but I don't require perfection.
