I've long wanted a Mauser-based sporter, but the ones I could afford did not appeal to me, and the ones that did appeal, I could not afford. I've always admired the early sporterized Mausers, those built back when receiver sights were state of the art, and I 've shied away from those drilled and tapped for scopes. I was lucky enough to stumble across this one a few days ago. It is a Gew-98 (Spandau, 1917) in a cut down military stock. The original barrel has been cut to 22 inches, a Williams receiver sight has been added, and the bolt handle has been bent down. Caliber remains 8 X 57 mm. I love this little rifle! It is relatively light and quick handling, and I love the receiver sight, which to me gives the rifle a much sleeker appearance as compared to a scoped rifle. This one is a keeper!

Mausers are overrated. No matter how many I get, I still haven't found "Mauser Right." :D

I picked up a butchered Oberndorf Gew98 a couple of months ago as a donor rifle. I'm seriously considering putting a receiver peep sight on it with it chambered in something like 358 Winchester.

Maybe.

I bought already butchered M98's at gun shows. Converted and rebarreled them into a .270, TWO .35 whelen's and a 25-06. All turned out very well indeed.
