i love mauser rifles, and want to build one.
but i think it should be a crime to sporterize an original action.

so what is the best mauser action on the market (a faithful mauser action, that actually looks like a mauser) to build off of ?

Are you planning on retaining the original barrel and caliber? Otherwise previous accuracy of the rifle is irrelevant. FWIW a Yugo in good condition is an accurate (2 moa) arm.

Haunt the stores, shows, and www sales sites for sporterized guns.
You could redo a Mauser that has already been Bubbafied and have the real thing with no guilty conscience.

eastsunshine, what are your plans for a build? Would you be using the original barrel?
The Yugo is an intermediate length action and will handle many different rounds. The original 8x57 is near 30'06 power in several loadings.

If you want a standard full size Mauser action, then look for a VZ-24 action. They are some of the best, reasonably priced, full size actions still left in the surplus market.

In my opinion the metallurgy on the m48 is dubious at best, and vuritually all the parts are non STD Mauser

Worthless pre chopped actual mauser rifles are a dime a dozen, simply find yourself a cheap k98 sporter and rebuilt it to your taste or search about and find one you like already built. But the overriding theme is sporterizations aren't worth a quarter what it costs to build one

I often buy stripped receivers from Gunbroker.com and build from those but that is the least cost efficient because individual components will cost more than a complete action. For instance I have one I built from a 1950 Colombian receiver, using a Parker Hale bolt($175), .308 barrel of unknown origin and a Remington Model 798 laminated stock. I got what I wanted but the end cost was around $600 and I did all the work myself except install the barrel and set headspace.

Interarms Mark X rifles were of very good quality and are readily available on the used market, or a Parker Hale. Pick one up and do what you like with it.
I have a new in the box Interarms Mark X action made in 1989 in my safe, just haven't figured out what to turn it into. I also have a new, never fired Mark X 30-06 barreled action in the safe from the same time period.
So many guns, so little time!!!!!!!!

For a pre-built modern Mauser, check out Interarms,Charles Daly or Remington M798 basically the same rifle. Husqvarna of Sweden also has the M640 although I don't know if anyone is importing them. Parker Hales are good, I just wish they hadn't removed the bolt guide though.

Just go buy a Brno or CZ 550 rifle you will end up with better quality metal, heat treating, and barrel and trigger.

yeah, it may be easyier to just go out and buy a rifle, but whats the fun in that. i am going to be turning a k. kale mauser i got to a 280, or 280 ai. (dont know if i want to deal with the whole fireforming thing right now. loading for to many other rifle cartridges.) the nice thing about the turk k. kales is that is a full size mauser action, and they are a dime a dozen. the bad thing is that pre-threaded barrels are only availible in 2 or 3 differnt calibers. this is because the k. kale, though being a large ring action, uses a small ring action thread size for the barrel shank. what caliber are you looking into building. this will make it easier for us to give you the best advice we can. brian

The M48 and/or the 24/47 are great actions to build off of. They have no historic value, so you won't have to worry about destroying a piece of history.

The actual action of the gun will have a very very small impact on accuracy, if any at all. You would have to be a competition shooter to notice any kind of very insignificant effect on accuracy. Since you said "sporterize" then I'm assuming you'll be building a sporter rifle. If that's the case, you won't see any kind of variance in accuracy.

Yugos are great actions for a build. They are solidly built and will last longer than you will.

i've built a lot of sporters off military actions & i base my action choice on what type of rifle i'm building & how much money i'm planning on putting into it. for open sight rifles i like to use oberndorf gew98's, dwm gew98's, or high hump peruvian 1909's & high hump turk 1903's . if its going to be scoped i'll look for a rail marked oberndorf's or an argie 1909, argies are also good for open sight build because they have a nice looking crest.
on my lower cost builds builds i'll use just about any surplus action that is in good shape. i try to stay away from using actions that were already drilled & tapped unless i can verify the holes are inline before paying for it. i don't realy care to redrill or weld up crooked holes anymore.
yugo's can be good donor actions but be prepared to spend more having them rebarreled.
yugo's are safety breached & will require the barrel to be cut for it so you cannot use off the shelf pre-threaded & short chambered barrels with a standard yugo bolt. if you swap the yugo bolt for a fn intermediat bolt or a turk 1903 bolt with the guid nubs you can use use standard barrels.

i will notice accuracy differences, i like to shoot my animals from very, very far away, i have built other rifles for this, but ive never done it with a mauser.

This is the kind of accuracy I got from my target rifle with a Yugo M48 action. This was shot after the first 20-25 that the gun had ever shot. And it's just regular factory ammo. I'm sure you can do better with handloads. I'd say you can hit a pretty small animal.

Commercial 98 actions are around from CZ/BRNO that are very nice. Many will be marked Interarms as they imported these for many years. I picked up one on Gunbroker in brand new condition with double set triggers for $245 and built this around it with a classic European style stock that I bought as a second (darned if I can find any flaws in it) and a used Douglas barrel I picked up for $50. Think I have about $475 in the whole project.
