A new 1100 project? Not sure if it's a good idea...trap gun

I was thinking about picking up a cosmetically challenged 1100 from a pawn shop or from the web, hopefully in the neighborhood of 250-300, putting a 30" Hastings high rib trap barrel on it, a Choate mark 5 conventional stock (butt pad shims), Choate fore end to match, building the cheek piece up with epoxy, and then finishing off with a paint job. Something in the metallic red and metallic black flavor, with some textured paint on the grip.

Currently I shoot around 21 or so with my 1100 with field rib 28" mod barrel, walmart ammo, and 13" LOP stock. I really enjoy trap, thus the desire to have a dedicated gun for it.

Thoughts? Concerns for my sanity? Thanks.

Lots of reworked 1100s are out there on trap lines. A couple things...

Instead of epoxy, try a stick on neoprene pad to get the elevation right, but only after patterning. Trap barrels oft have ribs a bit lower at the muzzle to raise POI. See what that barrel does first.

Second, wood is a lot more mutable than plastic. If the fit needs tinkering, plastic is not the best choice. If'n you're painting it anyway, no matter the material used.

Careful when poking around an 1100's innards. Some are quite sharp.

HTH....

If I have been shooting fairly regularly, I can usually manage 22 to 24 with my 1100 duck gun, so you should certainly be able to start stringing together straights with what you propose and some practice. An 1100 makes an excellent trap or skeet gun, depending on configuration, in my opinion.

I have a trap gun, but I used to love to show up at this one place with my 3" gun and rolled down hip boots because it drove this one guy, who was the local know it all, crazy. The gun of course wouldn't cycle with the trap loads, and when he said something I replied I used that gun on purpose so I wouldn't hit other people with empties. One time I missed the last bird and was shaking my head and said "Damn, 24" under my breath. He said, "You're not supposed to count." I replied, "Well, I only count misses, and if you don't count at all there's no point in shooting trap." I couldn't help myself, I just enjoyed rattling his cage.

You might try Remington! I priced a new set of wood furniture for a CLassic Trap to put on a field gun at about $75 last summer. That way you get the raised comb already. Good luck on your new endeavor.

Thanks for the replies. I've ordered an old beater off of Gunbroker. All said and done, in the 260ish range. I need to return some scope rings to midway, so maybe I'll just order the new stock on the return slip. Not going to be able to get the barrel yet, but I can make it look better in the mean time.

What distance should I be patterning at for trap? 30 yards? 40? I'm pretty fast in response to the bird.

1100 balances well and is long and fairly heavy. Sounds like a good foundation for a trap gun. And it is.:)

Thanks for those links, I couldn't find those at Midway. I rarely order anything at brownells. I may have to piggy back an S&A magwell to make the shipping tolerable.

FREE Brownell catalog

If you call Brownells and tell them that "Tom Gresham from Guntalk.tv (or guntalk.com) said I could get a FREE catalog". They'll send you one of there BIG books and I'm sure you'll be ordering from them again. :)

Thanks, but I prefer to search for my stuff online. I have a full midway catalog, because they keep sending me them, but I've never opened it. Also, brownells prices are outrageous.

By the time you add in shipping, lots of times I find Brownells cheaper overall, especially if I only need one or two little things and don't purposely 'invent' a list to make the shipping more tolerable.

Well, my shotgun for this project will be picked up on Monday, but today I was over at Lowes looking at what I could do for the buttplate since the idea of a choate stock didn't seem like a good one. I picked up some wood nuts for 10-24 machine screws, fender washers, and a couple of lengths of screws. While I'd rather have it in steel, it shouldn't be an issue as long as I'm careful not to over torque or cross thread the screws as the force is absorbed through the fender washers.

Anyone made an adjustable buttplate attachment before? How about an adjustable comb? I have enough material to make both.

Adjustable butt plate

I took a cheapo 12 ga Mossberg 500 and put a Graco adjustable butt plate so I could change the length for young and shorter shooters.

On my girlfriends cheapo 20ga I bought a Limbsaver grind to fit and installed it with the top screw only about an inch lower than the original screw hole.
Once she had it at the correct angle that fit her shoulder pocket I drilled and installed a second screw to secure it in place. Now it fits her like a glove.
