About two weeks ago I received a package from Knifemaker Mark Roe. Some of you may know of Mark as the owner of Pack River Knives. Over the past two years or so Mark has redesigned his ideas on knife making and has come up with some pretty cool designs. The new company is R2 Knives and Mark’s first offering is the Apex.
From his web site: The knife is 1/8" D2 Steel. Heat treated to 60.5RC by Paul Bos of Buck Knives. Flat ground main edge and top clip. Bead basted finish. Choice of black/grey G10 or black paper micarta scales. "Nuke" screws. Comes with fitted multi-carry kydex sheath (left, right, horizontal, or neck carry) from Sharpshooter Sheath Systems. Over length is 6 1/4" with a 3" blade. This is an extremely discreet and comfortable EDC knife. $175.00 (US Shipping included).
So, I’ve been carrying the Apex for two weeks now…everywhere! I carry on duty, off duty and through a week of Intermediate Crash Investigator class. The Apex is extremely easy to conceal. Once it’s on, I didn’t notice it until I needed it. I carry the Apex in a horizontal fashion at about the 12:30 position so that I can access it with my right hand. I really don’t notice that it’s there. It doesn’t bunch up on the belt. It doesn’t stick into my stomach. It doesn’t get in the way of getting into or out of my front pocket. What it does do, is cut through everyday stuff like butter, boxes, paracord, rope, carrots, tomatoes, sandwiches and plastic wraps of various sorts. I also cut up some sticks and bits of wood planking just to see what the Apex will take. It’ll take it!
My Apex came with black/grey G10. The handle is very comfortable in both forward and reverse grip and either edge out or edge in.
I don’t know what else to add, other than to say that the Apex is an AWESOME EDC knife! I’m very much looking forward to Mark’s other designs, including a folder.
