We have a new full-fledged, pro-gun shooter in the world.

This person was born and raised in a European country and moved to the U.S. in high school. S/he had the choice at age 18 to become a U.S. citizen or to become a citizen of her/his birth country. S/he choice the U.S.

I’ve known our new shooter for several years. We’ve worked together and played together. One thing I learned early on was that s/he had never handled, much less shot, any gun until very recently. This is not so surprising considering the country of birth and the general lack of interest in firearms outside “our culture.â€

A few years ago, the new shooter (called NS from now on) and I attended a very large shooting competition. Well, NS was just amazed at the sheer number on guns on public display. And NS goggled at the fact that 12 and 13 year olds were carrying guns and using them in the competition. But, NS quickly learned, with my help, that the guns are just a tool to be used by the possessor. All the false information learned from TV, media, and other sources was quickly replaced by common sense.

Fast forward to today. I spoke with NS today. S/he graduated recently from the Federal Flight Deck Officer program. That’s right, folks, another armed airline pilot in the skies. Well, NS told me as much as s/he legally could about the program. NS told me, in a very excited voice, about the excellent training, the broadness of topics, and how s/he went from about zero gun experience to being a qualified FFDO in just a week. I was absolutely stunned to learn how much NS went through in a week.

As I was talking to NS today, s/he invited me to go shooting tomorrow so s/he can show-off the newly acquired skills and weapon. Who am I to say no to such a request? So, tomorrow I get to see first-hand the skills of a new shooter and FFDO while enjoying a day at the range.

Good for him/her. Have fun.

(By the way, can one infer that you're an Airbus A320 pilot? In a previous life, I built an Airbus A320 part-task trainer.)

Yes, that's what I do.

At 18 did s/he get a choice on which gender to be too?
:uhoh: .... [forrest gump voice] That's all I got to say about that. [/voice]

Nicely written, Fly320s.

Absolutely correct. Gender is not relevant to this story.

And, I feel much safer knowing that there is another armed and trained Flight Deck Officer in the air. Next time I fly, I must remember to check for Airbus flights.

JetBlue regularly flys the Airbus, as I recall...
