Shooters to compete in Colorado

DANBURY — For several area shooters, the chance to make the National Olympic Developmental Team begins Saturday at the National Junior Olympic Trap and Skeet Shooting Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In all, nine shooters from the Brazoria County 4-H shooting sports club will compete alongside 46 to 48 other participants for a chance to make the team.
Competing for the Brazoria County team are Kelsey Williams, 15, Lauren Kulcak, 19, Jennifer Smith, 18, Jimmy Tillman, 15, Cory Williams, 17, Vincent Griffing, 16, Logan Kulcak, 16, Chris Minter, 17, and Calvin Smiley, 14.
“We probably have the highest number of participants out of any county in the country,†Brazoria County 4-H shooting sports club coach Bill Brooks said.
The invitation-only competition brings together participants from across the nation who have achieved the necessary scoring requirements in meets throughout the season.
Six of the shooters from Brazoria County will participate in Saturday’s doubles competition. The other three will take part in Monday’s singles event.
Of the nine area shooters, five have previously been invited to the competition, Brooks said.
“I think every one of them has a good chance of making the team,†he said.
Still, Brooks said chances of making the team do not diminish with experience level. The four first-timers, including Danbury’s Smith, who won the Texas Women’s Junior Olympic Championship on June 21 in Snook, also have a legitimate shot at making the team, he said.
“They have all been training really hard this year,†Brooks said.
And they’ve been doing most of it away from home.
The team is relegated to sites in Kerrville and North Dallas when they want to practice on regulation ranges because the facility they use locally is too small.
However, the Brazoria County 4-H club is using several fund-raising activities to remedy the problem with the construction of its own facility for shooters to use.
“It will be nice to have our own range and not have to pack up and travel so far on the weekends,†Brooks said.
