sunday i got to go out shooting with some good friends. later that night, at a new years party i was talking with a friend who didnt make it out into the hills with us earlier and he asked how the shooting trip was. i was very proud of a group i did and was talking about it. the rifle was a remington 1903a3 sporter and the group i shot was about 7 inch from what i estimate around 250-300 yards. maybe farther, some day we will get a range finder and know for sure. it was across a valley between two hills. with a good wind ripping thru that valley. anyway, i know my group wasnt that great considering what ive seen others do but i was very happy with my shooting.
but then another person at the party started talking and said that she had a friend who shot in the olympics and that he shot quarters at half a mile. i said i didnt believe it. so we spent a few minutes figuring out how far half a mile is. i dont recall how we got to the answer but we came up with 880 yards. i googled that and it is correct. so, what i said was that as far as i remember the world record for 1000 yards for .30 caliber was 3.1 somthing inches and by my calculations, if her friend is shooting quarters( the coin, not 1/4 inch) at 880 yards then he would be beating the world record. the girl still swore that he shoots quarters at half a mile.
can anyone who knows more than i do clarify this? what levels are olympic shooters performing at these days? am i mistaken on the record for 1000 yards?
