What's this guy holding? To my ignorant eye, it looks like a 9mm AK variant. Does such a thing exist, or is my eye just that ignorant  ?

Better question: Who is it? It looks like that nutzoid professor from Colorado who was going to speak at Hamilton College in NY prior to Bill O'Rielly making a stink about his comments that those who died 9/11 were Nazis.

I wasn't saying you were wrong, because I don't know what caliber it is. It is definately an AK variant as you said, but at the viewing angle it may be difficult to ascertain the true length of the magazine.

Sistema, you're right--Ward Churchill is his name.

Duckslayer--hope I didn't come off sounding snotty, I didn't mean to. Agree about the angle, but just thought it looked a bit weird.

Anyone know if a 9mm AK does exist? Or have any other alternative besides illusory foreshortening?

No snottiness taken here! I thought perhaps I sounded that way with my original question too. I do agree that the mag looks a bit narrow, but I have never heard of anyone mentioning an AK in other than 7.62x39 and 5.56xwhatever (AK74 I think).

That doesn't mean it doesn't exist though.

Looks like a MAK 7.62 X 39 with a butthole stock to me, its the foreshortening that makes the mag appear thinner, but still way to wide for 9mm.

To find the actual width, take the cosine of the angle between the rifle and the normal to the rifle, and divide that by the apparent width.

Roughly thats Cos 60/20mm = .5/20mm = 40mm

Okay, you sold me! Thanks for playing, all.

Guess I better be studyin' if I can't recognize prolly the most common rifle in the world, eh :p ?

Goon's right about the Bizon and Bizon II; they look like down-sized AKs. Calibers include 9x18, 9x19, .380, and 7.62x25 IIRC. The piece in the photo looks too big to be one, at least to me.

Do you know where the photo comes from? I'd be really surprised to see a genuine Bizon in the US, especially one in civilian hands. AFAIK, BATF wouldn't allow import, even if they made a version without the R&R feature.

Must be some trick of perspective at work here, unless some enterprising individual went to the enormous trouble and expense of converting an AKM and fabricating their own magazines. Probably cost as much as a nice old British sports car, and take even more work to make it run. :p

Bizon has a helical mag, so that is just a regular AK type from an odd angle.

So why is that fake-native American carrying one, to shoot the white man?

Not sure what the context of the picture is; it came from promo material at the British anarchist press that has published at least some of his stuff.

Don't ask me how I came across it  ; the guy is having his fifteen minutes, and was being discussed elsewhere (in a context where there was no chance in hades anyone would be able to identify the gun), and I just wondered about the prop.
