Greetings friends of The High Road. I am currently working on a sporter project using a Yugo m24 action. I bought it for a Turkish, but after researching, it is clearly not by the barrel length, crest on the reciever, size of the threads on the barrel, etc. So my question is, where can I find a magazine that will accomadate a 30-06 length cartridge? I found one on Brownell's for around $90, but it is made of an alloy aluminum, and I want something that I can rust blue. The only others I can find cost an arm and a leg. Could someone link me to something I can use? Is there one I could order from Numrich from another model that will fit this rifle and serve the purpose?
My goal is to get a magazine that will accomadate a 30-06 length cartridge, can be slow rust blued, and cost less than $100.

If the action screws measure 7 5/8" apart, it's an intermediate length action and will not fit a 30'06 length cartridge without a major rework of the magazine.

Standard length Mausers measure 7 7/8" on the action screws, and will work fine with '06 length cartridges without mods.

The intermediate Mauser actions do work for 308 length cartridges, but action parts and stocks need to be for the Yugo versions like the M48 and 24/47.

If you want to use a Turkish Mauser for converting, you are best served getting "K.Kale" stamped actions which are large ring with small ring threads. I have used these Turks for a few of my own rifles.

Thank you NCsmitty. This does measure 7 5/8". I don't have anything in .308, maybe I'll try it. (I change my mind about what caliber at least once a week.) I do have a "K.Kale", it will be next in line after this one. I've already drilled and tapped, and bent the bolt handle on this one though, so there's really no going back now!

so there's really no going back now!

There is no need to, as the M24 is a pretty decent action and you can choose from a bunch of different cartridges that will work. Any round designed to work through a commercial short action should be ideal if you stick with 308 head size.
The 260 Rem or the 7mm-08 are very good choices, and provide excellent long range potential without heavy recoil.

So many choices! My favorite rifle right now is chambered in .243 win. I've killed most of my deer with it. My wife has a 7mm-08, and I like it too. I really want a .260 Rem., but Midway shows no backorder on the Adams & Bennett barrels in that caliber. I can't afford/ain't willing to pay for the Shilen barrels they sell. That leaves me with the .308, or I thinking about the 6.5x55mm. According to my loading manuals, the COAL is around 3 inches or a tad more. I think that would work. What do you think?

The 6.5x55 is my favorite caliber, and I made a VZ-24 with a heavy F54 A&B barrel. With 98 style actions, you are not restricted to the lower level loads made for the older Swede Mausers.
I did not mention the 6.5x55 before, because many are turned off by a round designed more than 110 years ago. It is an amazing cartridge design and will work nicely in the M24, and still seat the bullets out. It's reputation is legendary, and it's not just hype.

Thanks again, NCsmitty. I think I might have made my mind up finally with the 6.5x55. Part of the point of this build to me is to get a caliber rifle that I don't already have, without just buying a complete rifle. What's the fun in that?
