i have an AMD-65 that was built up from a kit on an OOW reciever and recently discovered something unusual. if i pull the bolt carrier back slowly it will lock just short of the recoil spring's full compression. it will not do this when i fire it, just when i pull it back somewhat slowly. it will release if i pull it back a little and let it go but i cannot push it forward. my question is this; is this normal or a sign of something wrong with my rifle?

the boltcarrier will stay back with or without a magazine in the rifle.

My '03 SAR 1 also does this. I chose from 4 SAR's when I bought mine, and the other 3 also did it. Your gun is functioning normally, I'd say.

My SAR 1 does that as well. If you take the dust cover off while you work the action, you'll see that what's prolly happening is that the carrier is hanging up a touch on the gas tube, at the point where the piston screws into the carrier.

The carrier could prolly be stoned to the point that it wouldn't do it anymore, but since it doesn't seem to affect function really I've left mine alone.

This is a useful feature at the range, too. When the range goes cold, and the Range Officer ask you to remove ammunition and leave bolts open--you can leave your bolt open.

My SAR does it, too.

I would also check the FCG. For some reason some US made triggers will catch on the bottom of the carrier and hold it back. I have seen this on several SARs and WASRs.
If it works, don't worry about it.

All of my Hungarian AK/AKM rifles do this. It is the interface between the hammer and the bolt carrier. If you gave the carrier a rap with your palm the bolt and carrier will go into battery. It also depends how much wear is on the parts and whose US HTS (hammer, trigger & sear) you are using. Stock Hungarian hammer will do it as with the Tapco G2 groups. I didn't notice it as much with the SAR2 with the Century HTS. My Bulgarian AK-74 does this with the Tapco HTS. Nothing to worr about.

Confession time:
I like to slap the charging handle when it is at this "sweet spot" to chamber a round because I think it looks cool.

:scrutiny: Never seen that happen before... of course, I've got a stock SAR-1 that I did some FCG/rail polishing to a while back.
