Okay, so I've been looking around for a nice leveraction in .357mag with a 3/4 magazine, or a hidden tube mazagine (only 4 shots). Now, I noticed that none have pistol grips, which is what I want; can the stock be switched out to one with a pistol grip, after cutting a "groove" for the lever itself?

The receiver tangs are straight in a straight stock gun, so you'd have to deal w/that as well. I'm sure it could be done, but it'd be a big PIA, I think.

You'd have to heat and bend the stock tang(s) to fit the pistol-grip stock. However, having done that, the rest is easy. On a Marlin, for example, simply buy a pistol-grip stock for the Model 336, and a curved lever for the same. Replace the straight stock and lever with the curved ones, and you're all set.

Getting the radius right (and consistent) would be the main PIA. You'd wanna make a form w/the shape of a buttstock, methinks, to use as either a mandrel or a template/gauge.

Hm. Easier, it would seem, to buy a different one. Any ideas for a pistolgrip stock in .357mag, with a 3/4 magazine or less?

I'm basically looking to make a rifle minus the stock (i.e. 28" overall with a pistolgrip, no stock or anything. Fun stuff. :D )

If you wouldn't mind .44 Mag...

Winchester has a discontinued model called the Pack Gun, which is just what you're looking for. It's an 18" barrel with a 5rd. tube.:)

www.cdnninvestments.com was blowing them out for around $250.

Nope! Not at all. Trust me on this, I've used a shortened lever action with a pistolgrip before, and it was fun, handy, and compact.

Marshall, you may be thinking about an AR-15 or AK-47 type pistol grip, like this:

Obviously, this sort of pistol grip wouldn't work at all with a lever-action rifle! But that's not what we're talking about here - we're referring to what some call a "half-pistol-grip", a curved portion of the stock behind the trigger-guard, as seen on this Marlin 336:

This compares to the older-style straight stock on a lever-gun, as seen on this Marlin 1894C:

Hope this clears up any confusion.

With a Marlin I think that you also got to change the lever plate so that the bottom tang is also curved. I've read of this being done to different models of Marlins because the owner didn't want a straight grip or changed it because they wanted the straight grip.

Victorlewis,

Does the Pack Rifle CDNN has have a manual safety (crossbolt or tang)? I didn't see it in their latest catalog.

Thanks,
Steve

Hmmm. Seeing that picture of the shortened levergun with a straight stock grip may have me doing that instead. I'd still rather have the pistolgrip, er, half pistol grip.

QUOTE] Crossbolt. I've yet to even SEE a new one of any sort with the tang safety.
