Luckily, this "Snake" turned out to be a lovely Colt Python. Take a look at my pictures and tell me your opinions of this revolver?:

That is one beautiful gun. I would prefer it with Service stocks, though. Those grips are not likely original to the gun.

Very nice aquisition! And it looks to be a 3" barrel on that Python. If so it's an extremely nice aquisition! Well done!

I had to go over to gunbroker to check and compare it to a 2.5" barrel Python.

It's cetainly looks to be a 3" barrel.
 
Wow, just looked up Pythons on gunbroker. I realize it's an auction site, so the "value" is based on whatever people are willing to pay, but most of the Pythons on the first page are going for amounts in the thousands.

Why are they worth so much, compared to other quality revolvers being made today? And why do so many people have Pythons that have never been fired? Seems to me that they must have expected them to be collector items. Were Pythons kinda designed around that?
 
You might want to pay the price :eek: and get it lettered by Colt. The 3" barrel was a non-standard length, but the company did make some. The trouble is that 3" barrels were available, so a fair number of guns that came with other lengths were converted. Only those that were made originally with the 3" size are worth extra bucks (and it can be substantial) but a potential buyer will want proof.

In an age when "make it cheaper" is the watchword, the Python was one of the last (some say "the last") production revolvers that were made and fitted by craftsmen, rather then automated machines. It represents a level of quality we are unlikely to see again. Because of this it remains popular with collectors that don't shoot what they have, but admire what they represent - as well as shooters and active users. Python owners tend to be individuals who don't accept the compromises that today's labor and overhead costs impose on manufactrers.
 
Where would one acquire an aftermarket 3' Python barrel?

Is there such a thing as an aftermarket 3" Python?
 
Slick, I would get it lettered assuming it is a 3". Nice addition to your other Colts. You still have those Troopers?
 
Guillermo, if you read that old thread, you will see that there were two routes to an aftermarket 3" Python.
Colt sold off excess barrels, I remember seeing them advertised by Numrich. That was 10-15 years ago, they are long gone by now, undoubtedly put on guns and sold at fraudulently inflated prices.
One distributor made them up by sawing off the ugly 8" guns.
 
I'd indeed get it lettered from Colt to see if it shipped as a 3". The difference in value is substantial if it left the factory as shown. It's unfortunate that there are rascals out there that will do ANYTHING to make extra $$ by switching out barrels, selling reproduction boxes, manuals, hang tags and paperwork as original and the list goes on.
All that said it's a beautiful looking Python that I hope letters as original for you :)
