Today I got to take my Marlin 60 with my new Vortex scope out on some public land in VA looking for squirrels. Coming from a shotgun only state, it was quite a satisfying experience to carry a rifle afield.

I probably had my most successful hunt yet, getting 5-6 squirrels in my crosshairs when previously hunts have yielded much less (I have only been hunting a total of 6-7 times). Unfortunately not a single one was silhouetted against a trunk or the ground, so I couldn't take a single shot for risk of the bullet landing somewhere for which I couldn't account. I am pretty sure I will take my shotgun for a few more weeks until the squirrels are lower on the trees and ground.

I had a great time and really like the photo I took through scope on the way back to my truck above.

i too have had very good days in the field with out fireing a shot, its not always about killing some animal. for me its being alone in the wild looking in wonder at gods wook. eastbank.

I know exactly what you mean. How do you concentrate on scouting or early hunting seasons with this going on around you.

There are times I wish I would have left my gun at home.

These are also from Pa where I spent my fist 50 yrs before I move to NC

Didn't see nor hear a squirrel last Monday, but a "bad" day in the field is better than a "good" day at the office. Wasn't really a bad day... my buddy and I found persimmon trees loaded with fruit (so we're going back and we'll harvest them to make persimmon jam) plus we found a few walnut trees bearing fruit (we don't eat them...they make a great dye for colonial clothes and woodworking projects...I do fully traditional hunting, flintlock and historic clothing.) :D

First rule of hunting. Anytime you arrive home safely it is a good hunt. Anything else is bonus.
