For years I have owned at least one revolver in my collection. Mainly Dan Wessons and Smiths. Never a Colt, even after 15yrs of collecting. They were always out of my price range at the time I saw one for sale or when I had the money, none were for sale.

Then a strange thing happen a few months ago. Walking around a local gun show lying among the usual over priced relic junk and regular priced every day pedestrian stuff was an old guy with 2 early Colt Cobras. One mint and one well used (but not abused). Then I saw the prices... I thought I was seeing things, $395 for the mint $295 for the shooter. As I fondled both with visions of L.A. Confidential and every other 50's crime drama running through my head... I was suddenly snapped out of my little dream by the realization that no matter how much I wanted to, I could not buy both that day. As much as I wanted that mint safe queen, I knew my drool everytime I touched it would quickly ruin its finish and I just can't bring myself to buy things I'll never shoot no matter the price.

So I bought the shooter after a timming and lock up inspection. I bought some MAG TEC 158gr standard pressure SJHP's and went to the range. Shoots great (albet about 4" high @15yrds). Later I looked up the serial number and it was right on the end of 1959 or early 1960 prouduction.

I was now happy to be in possession of one of the best Colt carry pieces of all time. Then walking around a local gun show a few weeks later I see a dealer buddy of mine and stop in for a chat. A "Common Friend" of ours comes by with a mint S&W triple lock he just bought and was selling off a few pieces to help offset it's substantial purchase. Among them was a very nice 1972 Cobra... Price? A paltry $350, I couldn't pass it up.

So for your viewing pleasure:
