Well over the past year I started getting pretty interested in firearms. I bought myself a shotgun for my birthday and recently bought a Ruger 10/22 for fun.
However, I come from a pretty Anti gun home as does my girlfriend. Naturally, I just kept my new hobby to myself to avoid any drama.
Well, a few weeks back I was adjusting my girlfriend's back on the floor and she glanced under my bed and said aloud in disbelief "What is that Remington box doing here?"
Very quickly we were back to our routine having mostly put Remington out of her mind. However she called me on the phone just to say hi as I was leaving Dick's Sporting Goods with my new Ruger rifle. She asked me what I was up to and I told her. What was the point of lying? She was very upset.
Many difficult conversations later It came down to us having differing principles and values. I believe it is my duty to take responsibility for my own safety as well as my loved ones by having a good gun for home defense. She believes that guns are an object that symbolize everything that is wrong in the world. My best compromise was to only have a shotgun for home defense and her best compromise was that I could have as many guns as I wanted as long as I did not keep them in the house.
Today I broke up with her.
I look at my 2 good ole' guns and I can't help but feel resentful towards them for making me lose my girlfriend of 3 years. I need to remind myself that I did not choose guns over her. Our futures were incompatible instead because of our contradicting principles.
Damn....
