I'm almost finished with my first AR build, but I have a question about my fixed Rock River Arms Entry stock:

I've got the buffer tube as far in as I can without overly interfering with the buffer retention pin, but there seems to be a bit of play in the stock back and forth and just a hair-width of play up and down.

Mind you, it's less movement than on a collapsable stock, but I imagined that a fixed stock would be completely solid.

Am I wrong to expect that or am I doing something wrong or is it a component issue that has a simple fix?

Thanks for any help.

I've got a cheapie pistol buffer that was a hair too long. A little filing made a notch for the retention pin and all is well.

It's the stock shell that's wobbly, but I could actually tighten the tube more if it wouldn't hinder the retainer pin.

I'm not opposed to filing a notch, but I wanted to check with y'all first. I'm pretty sure it's a milspec tube and my lower is a NatMil, which should be milspec.

No big deal then. I've got a bit of movement in mine. Most A1/A2 shell over receiver extension stocks will have a small amount of play.

I'm pretty sure it's a milspec tube

It ain't.

The entry length receiver extension is a proprietary part so there isn't really a "milspec" for it to follow.

Just locktite the screw and crank it down. Most of the jiggle should go away once everything is tightened up.

question, is it really play in the buffer tube or is it possible that you are seeing play in the upper and lower half? my brother swore up and down that my buffer tube needed tightening until I told him to grab the pistol grip instead of gripping the top of the upper receiver. there is a bit of play with the upper and lower receivers and sometimes it can appear as if that is the stock instead of other things.

another thing that could be happening is you could have failed to get the buffer tube detent pushed down far enough when screwing on the stock and once it was pressed down you had extra threads available to screw into.

Oh it's definitely not the mating between the upper and lower. Here's what I did after reading Sam's last post:

I noticed that when I would take hold of the butt stock and rotate my hand back and forth, the stock and tube turned together. It's probably only a millimeter of play now. I took a rubber lid opener pad and held onto the inside of the tube and turned the rear screw a little more, and I think it helped some. So in the big picture as long as the retaining pin isn't hindered, I'm probably going to leave it, since the fixed stock's nipple won't allow for the tube to just back out of the lower, because the rear screw is on tight, so that little bit of play probably isn't going hurt anything.

Thanks for all the replies.
