I had the pleasure of attending the Dave Grossman "The Bulletproof Mind: Mental Preparation for Combat" seminar yesterday at the Columbus OH PD Police Academy.

My intent is not to give a blow by blow account of this seminar, rather it is just to say: "GO TO THIS SEMINAR IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!" Of course I had read his material, but you really need to hear it in person.

Everyone is familiar with Grossman's books "On Killing" and "On Combat" by now. These books are on the Marine Corps reading list:

http://www.mcu.usmc.mil/ProDev/reading files/Reading List 01.doc

Grossman states that there used to be alot more books on this list, but 7yrs of war has pared this list down to what works, and this is a testament to his material.

He is just an amazing speaker/presenter, and I highly recommend this seminar for anyone who carries a gun, Police Officer/Military/Armed Citizen.

Also, of note, he mentioned that he and Bruce Siddle have purchased the Detonics company. He mentioned several times that he carries a Detonics Combatmaster and a blade everywhere. He encourages Cops to carry 24/7, in fact he said this ALOT throughout the day. He talked alot about Israel being a model for us, a society of armed and trained individuals.

Things of note that he advocates for Police are: Patrol Rifles(he said the day of the shotgun has passed, which I totally disagree with), 50 Cal Sniper Rifles for SWAT, Go Bags for Patrol, and Stress Innoculation Training(force on force training). He also mentioned his disdain for golf, and said golf courses were a waste of a perfectly good rifle range.:) I couldn't agree more.

As for the Columbus Police Department, and the Columbus Police Academy, all I can say is: WOW!

The Officers I met were really professional and positive. I was very impressed with their whole operation. I was able to get a look at some of their firearms operation, and it is very impressive. Their Officers are well trained, and get plenty of trigger time. They are issued M&P 40S&W pistols (w/180gr HST), Remington 870 shotguns(with collapsable AR stocks, Surefire forends, +2 exptension, 18" bead sighted barrel, and slings), and brand spanking new surplus M16A1 patrol rifles(w/Hornady 60gr TAP for compatability with the M16A1's 1-12 twist rate) converted to semi-auto. Their Rifleman are all issued a personal rifle and trained extensively in a 3 Day Patrol Rifle Class, and are help to strict standards. Pretty nice firearms package.

Their SWAT unit is really something and is very well equipped:

This unit has amazing record for really great Police work, not just SWAT work.

The academy facilities are really amazing:

I mean this place is state of the art. They are big believers in scenario training for their Officers, and have great facilities for it. I have to think these are some of the best trained Officers in the Nation.

Anyone considering getting into Law Enforcement would be wise to look into this agency.
