Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan, press secretary to the president of Pakistan, tells ABC News that -- if found -- Osama bin Laden won't be arrested, as long as he promises to behave like a "peaceful citizen."

"If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden 'would not be taken into custody,' Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, 'as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen," report Brian Ross and Gretchen Peters at ABC's blog, The Blotter.

"No, as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen, one would not be taken into custody," said Khan. "One has to stay like a peaceful citizen and not allowed to participate in any kind of terrorist activity."

"The surprising announcement comes as Pakistani army officials announced they were pulling their troops out of the North Waziristan region as part of a 'peace deal' with the Taliban," reports ABC.

Pakistan will also be returning many Taliban prisoners and seized weapons.

Well, there goes THAT war. :scrutiny: What....the...HELL?!!

Good.

Hopefully he'll get more and more relaxed.
And come out into the open...

Offensive, but doesn't really matter. We have to continue supporting the Musharraf administration over there even if it means they're going to give bin Laden a hall pass.

Why? Because if Musharraf goes down, then in all likelihood he's going to get replaced by somebody who thinks a lot like bin Laden does.

...and Pakistan has nukes.

What....the...HELL?!!

The Pakistanis have realized that the American people do not have the fortitude to continue this fight to the end, so they have decided to hedge their bets and begin to be friendly to the likely winner (Hint, that's not us).

Probably a good strategy on their part.

After what you see daily in this country as far as the lack of support goes, would you put yourself in harms way for America knowing that if you need help it won't be there?

Ask the Republic of South Vietnam how that worked for them, and shortly you'll be able to ask the "Democratic Republic of Iraq" how it worked for them as well.

Osama, come out, come out, wherever you are.

There have previously been reports of peaceful citizens being killed by dastardly US cruise missiles. Who knows - it could happen again.

If Bin Laden was stupid enough to believe this, he wouldn't still be alive today. Is this transparent to anyone else?

While I agree that if he appears in public, he's going to get popped with a cruise missile, I'm just aghast at Pakistan's appeasement.

No, he's not that stupid. He's evil, but he led a successful guerrilla resistance against the Soviet army and survived years of attempted backstabs after that, he's far from an idiot. I'm sure Pakistan knows he's not that stupid, either.

It's the gesture that galls me. They're giving the Taliban back their weapons? What's with that? Those weapons will be used against the American and Coalition soldiers in Afghanistan!

That's what gets me even more than the bin Laden offer. That they are doing this, and it's quite possible that an RPG they hand over to the Taliban could be one more honor guard visiting an American soldier's family with a letter, one more flag-draped coffin coming home.

That is Not Okay, to me.

what support ?

If you will look back thru the history of wars fought by the U.S. you will see that there has never been a war that was fully supported by the people and this includes the Revolution and WW2. Only now the damned media plays up every little B.S. act to make it seem that we're getting out tails kicked in Iraq. Which is far from true. But then you can't sell newspapers or get high ratings by telling about about the good things that have happened. Suicide bombers make the news because it's sensationalized. Ever wonder what would happen if the liberals didn't pay attention to them ?

Given that the Pakistanis set up and funded the Taliban to breed "freedom fighters" for use in Kashmir, and that Pakistani pilots took paid leave and went to Afganistan with thier aircraft to fight for the Taliban against the Nothern Alliance, this shouldn't surprise anyone.

Pakistan's support in the War on Terror (tm) has always been calculated to keep us off Musharef's back until they could go back to their real plans. Which have always been focused to their immediate East. But make no bones about it, Musharef's a mudering thug, no better than any of a bunch of other murdering thugs we've allied ourselves with over the years. Most of those came back and bit us in the butt, and I doubt this one will turn out any better. The problem is, the scale of the bite is much bigger now.

Bush hypocrisy with craPakistan just gets better doesn't it

Bush's hypocrisy with pakistan has been going on since the beginning of the phony "war on terror." Pakistan is a military dictatorship yet bush supports Pervez PUBLICLY in every way possible. Bush chums for the cameras with him even though everything in the story that began this thread is very old news. Hey bush and your non thinking supporters, whatever happened to your big mouthed threat against "anyone who harbors terrorists" or "gives support to terrorists?" Oh that's right, it was meaningless and a fraud. Fine George, let's let your obsession with Iran carry us to war with THEM, as pakistan harbors people you claimed were enemy #1. Why not "spread democracy" to pakistan? Is it because that has been an obvious failure in Opiumistan, er I mean Afghanistan.

I don't see a "war on terror" going on at all from george bush. I see "cowboy" talk, lies, poor planning, and the creation of MORE antagonism against america.

Bush apologists will claim that "there's nothing we can do about pakistan." Fine, I would just like a little consistency and honesty from bush for a change. If there's "nothing we can do" about pakistan, then why are we even in the region? To help every INCH of ground become a poppy field?

Bush supporters need to wake up and force their "man" to come clean about his handler's REAL agendas. Since that isn't going to happen, let's get a president who will abide by the constitution and take care of AMERICAN borders.

Honestly, would anyone on the planet REALLY believe that we just can find him? That nobody knows where he is? That not even one person will rat him out? And how many times have we known where he is, only to have him 'slip away'?

The prez says Osama is wanted dead or alive and I think that statement rings hollow as every time we have the chance to nail him we pass on it.

All this assumes that he is still alive.

He hasn't issued a video since before Tora Bora.

If he's pink mist somewhere then the issue will never be resolved.

FWIW, Italy finally found the head of their local cosa nostra after 40+ years of looking.

Eric Rudolph evaded capture for over 5 years, even though the feds knew what state he was in, made him a top priority, and offered a million-dollar reward.

As difficult as that was, finding someone in the tribal zone is a bazillion times harder.

"The surprising announcement comes as Pakistani army officials announced they were pulling their troops out of the North Waziristan region as part of a 'peace deal' with the Taliban," reports ABC.

ABC News is quoting itself now? That sure does not surprise me.

Pakistan can't survive a war with any of their provinces. It'd be like the US trying to stamp out Texas or Florida. People in their own military come from that region. To view this as a law and order thing and restrict their activities to rebels is what they have to do unless they want every single person there (who are not all Taliban  ) at war with them.

You guys are just going to have to be happy with the tens of thousands of innocent people they've already killed.

Who?

Who do you have in mind?

Vick
It doesn't come down to saying "this person is our answer and savior." I believe the federal government is a complete tyranny that needs to be abolished by the people (but won't be). It's unlikely because americans refuse to elect congressional representatives who will respect the constitution, and refuse to elect state legislators who will stand up to the feds. I would like to see divided government, and to see congress change parties EVERY election.

I believe that all of the al C.I.A.da "tapes" have been frauds and that OBL is long since dead. There is a SLIM SLIM chance that pakistani intelligence is holding him FOR the U.S. government, for future propaganda use, but I honestly doubt it. If he were still alive, they would be using him in these ULTRA low quality tapes that magically surface once a month (that never help osama's cause, they only help the U.S. propaganda machine). Pakistani intelligence has a long history of being a surrogate for the U.S. government, and doing things the U.S. government can't afford to get caught doing.

The Pakastani ambassador was interviewd by Blitzer in the situation room and stated that he spoke to the Major General that had supposedly made the statement and the Major General told the ambassador that he was not only misquoted, but grossly misquoted. Later in the interview he stated that if Osama were found Pakistan would hand him over to the US.

Since the Pakastani government has decided to no longer cooperate with our government in this "War on Terror", one would hope that our government sees fit to halt any and all aid to Pakistan.

But I guess there is about as much chance of that taking place as there is of an elephant suddenly growing wings and flying to the moon.

Sindawe, maybe you should have read post #21?

Since once again we find that the MSM is less than accurate, this thread need not devolve into restatements of our opinions about ABC, et al.
