Sorry I didn't mention this earlier.
The American Bladesmith Society Youth Hammer-in is this weekend in Seviereville, TN. Larry Harley and Wes Byrde have been teaching groups of kids 9-16 to heat and beat steel into interesting, attractive and useful shapes for a few years. This year's event is at Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It nominally starts on Friday, but things "heat up" starting at 0800 Saturday.
It is one of the few opportunities for young people to be introduced to and learn basic forging and hammering techniques any more.
If anyone wants to drop in and cheer the kids on, or donate to the ABS Youth Program, feel free to look for the tent set up in the SMKW lower parking lot. Just follow the ring of the anvil if you're not sure of where to go.
Michaela wants to make a pair of Sai this year to use in her Shaolin classes.
