5th Annual Youth Hammer In

June 28, 29, and 30, 2013

Young participants will again have an opportunity to forge their own blades in 2013. During the June 28, 29, and 30, 2013 weekend. One-on-one instruction under the direction of an experienced American Bladesmith Society Master Smith, Journeyman Smith, or Apprentice Smith will again be offered at this year's Smoky Mountain Youth Hammer-In at Smoky Mountain Knife Works, Sevierville, TN.

It will be open to participants between the ages of 9 and 18, who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and will feature hands-on forging and finish work.

Safety Equipment:
Your safety is important. Please wear leather shoes or work boots ( no tennis shoes), cotton shirts, and long cotton pants, work apron, and leather work gloves that fit your hands. We will provide safety glasses. Feel free to bring your favorite hammer and tongs.

Participants Registration and Bladesmith Instructors arrive and set up forging equipment
By mid to late afternoon and some forging will begin

Saturday, June 29, 2013
8:30 AM - Welcome, Safety Talk, Knife Nomenclature and Design Chalk Talk
9:00 AM - Forging Demo, Pairing of students with instructors, Begin the Individual Instructions On The Anvil under close supervision
12:00 PM - Lunch
1:00 PM - Forging Demo, Individual Instructions On The Anvil --- Continue throughout the day
3:00 PM - Demo Hand Finishing Techniques
5:00 PM - Fires out
6:00 PM - Dinner

8:00 AM - Devotional Service
9:00 AM - Chalk Talk on Handles and Guards, Individual Instructions On The Anvil ---Continue throughout the day
10:00 AM - Heat Treating Demo
12:00 PM - Lunch
2:00 PM - Fires out and load up equipment
Wrap-up question time and presentations of certificates.

i didnt know where to put it
the best thing the ABS does w its time and money
and besides French Camp Academy, the most rewarding thing ive done my whole career
 
We've let folks know about the Youth Hammer-In info the past couple of years so they could get their kids to join in.

It is a great program, BUT be sure you understand it can get very hot with the normal temps and with 8-10 gas forges roaring (Larry, I think if we face the forges outward we'll be able to keep the heat down a bit).
