Accumulating guns...Am I nuts?

Hand Rifle Guy just sold me on a Garand or that Remington Model 8/81.

Dr Jones: I imagine that somewhere the marginal utility of buying another weapon will start tapering off and you will settle into a 'normal' consumer pattern...

... say, somewhere around the accumulation of gun number 100.

Am I nuts?

Nope.

Every gun you buy is one more the "masters" will have to look for. The more they have to look for, the more nervous they will get. The more nervous they are, the better off we are. :neener:

Drjones- I will certify you as certifiable if that will slow your gun acqisitions down so there will be more for me!! Besides, they are an investment that always goes up!! My Ruger #1 w/match XXairguage bbl for $350.00-what's it worth now? My Shilow Sharps Farmingdale Gemmer in 4 digit range for $1200.00- My 1911 Colt Commercial mfged in 1914 in mint condition for $1000.00. What are they going for now? Best investment around, and they are FUN!!! BUY MORE, BUT WAIT 'TIL I AM THROUGH. :D

uh, Dr. J. what you need to be doing is seeking out old timers, folks who are getting up in years to the point where they may no longer feel like they want to shoot one or more of whatever they may have in their closets. If they're of like mind to those folks here, I'm sure they'd rather have those things in the hands of someone who would preserve them and use them wisely, and if approached appropriately with a reasonable monetary offer be persuaded to sell them to you...

the more you have completely off paper the better you are set for the future. That's why the left hates private sales so much!

Dr. Jones-
In my professional opinion I wouldnt send you out for a psych evaluation. :)

Your just trying to complete your Three-Gun Combo. :) Go for that 30-30. You know you want it. Then show it off at the meet on the 23rd :)

Take care

There are alot worse things to spend money on than guns, so stock up! You can always recoup a significant portion of a gun's original value if you decide to sell, which isn't true with many things, even "necessities" like food and clothing. I use this fact as justification for most of my gun purchases :D

The only valid reason to stop accumulating guns is because you already own one of every model in existence. Once you reach that point, you start on the custom and commemorative firearms.

Accumulating guns...Am I nuts?...

...Actually, it would be my first rifle...

If you don't have a rifle then you have not yet begun to accumulate. If you don't have a C&R then you really haven't begun to accumulate (I just ordered three today. Still trying to figure out how that happened  )

Most of all, I feel a need to accumulate guns because living in CA, the day may very well come when it becomes incredibly difficult, if not outright impossible to own them.

Ammo might be a better bet (after you've accumulated a few rooms full of rifles :D ).

You're asking this group if you're nuts for accumulating guns?

Yes, you're nuts....but it's not for accumulating guns.

The only valid reason to stop accumulating guns is because you already own one of every model in existence.
Change that to: "own two of every model in existence" and I'll agree with you.

:D :neener: :D

Three, that way I can give one to each of the kids. Thinking about it, bump that up to four that way they won't plan on getting rid of me to get their inheretance (I can just give them theirs while still enjoying mine). Ooops, better make that five of each when you factor Mrs. L in.

Five of each it is :D .

Are you nuts? Yes, my dear Jones, you are certainly nuts. No question about it.

Now, what was that about buying guns?

:D

Okay, no, you ain't nuts, and yes, the sky is falling. Follow the advertising maxim - buy now and SAVE!

And save them out of state.

What about different finishes? Barrel lengths? Grips/stocks?

Get a military-style semi-auto rifle while you still can: mini 14, M1A, SU16, SKS, whatever.

SHTF don't apply to me but...

If you think you might be crazy because you want to get another gun....I went over the edge many, many years ago.

The only valid reason to stop accumulating guns is because you already own one of every model in existence.

The only other reason I can think of is because your DEAD!

Self-defense almost never enters into my train of thought, unless you live in a third world country or a few crime centers in this country (consider moving) its a bogus issue with me. I enjoy guns for their history and design, I don't try to impress people with them or dream of "taking out" a bunch of right wing nuts. I rarely discuss my hobby with friends or anyone else other than THR, sometimes it pays NOT to advertise. I do it for my own entertainment/enjoyment, the "fruits of my labor"sort of speak. Thats all the reason I need.

The sky is falling only for a very few, Ohio will soon join the list of CCW states. Thats tangible progress even to the most crazy doomsayer.

Nuts is such an ugly word.......
I prefer to think of myself as eccentric. Yes my voices and I much prefer eccentric.

Don't you have to have millions of dollars to be called eccentric? I would call you unorthodox. Yeah, that's it.

Actually, it would be my first rifle: a Marlin 336 stainless, in 30-30, thank you.
Actually, I just bought one of these from a fellow forumite. I get it for Christmas so I haven't shot it yet. Can't wait to get out to the range on 1/3 to try it out. Overall though, it looks like a VERY well made rifle. Go for it. I think everybody needs a lever rifle in the safe.

RE: "..Isn't .30-.30 ammo pricey?"

I've found it at Walmart for about $6.00/20 -- American Eagle. If you get the .30-.30 like I did(Win. '94), you probably won't shoot more than that until your shoulder gets used to it. Get into handloading and price plummets. BTW I had my first three handguns and really wasn't into rifles.
I stumbled on a PPtransfer and aquired an older Win. 22 Lr., the Win. '94 and, a couple weeks later, a friend offered me his SKS at a great price; now I spend equal time with handguns and rifles...they're all fun! I highly
reccomend the SKS -- minimal recoil and that cheap Russian ammo means you can shoot a lot! California has no internal gun lock law, as stated earlier in this thread. If you move to a more gun-friendly state, just buy "hi-cap" magazines.

So, Yes! Buy as many as you can....I don't see any downside.

NUTS!! Naw ......... :D

Every purchase i make is ''the last'' Trouble is the last month has seen an average of approx one per week. And there are still 2 in the ''pipeline''. Oops!

What the heck .... I keep telling my wife ..... she can bury me three times over with the funds tied up in my inventory .... and still leave enough so my son can choose some choice items!:D

The Marlin 336 in .30-30 is a great rifle. The 20" rifle balances extremely well, so it is easy to shoot offhand. Recoil, while not severe, is enough to make you flinch if you are not careful. The recoil doesn't bother me that much unless I fire off many rounds in succession from the bench. It is incredibly accurate, too. I have one made in 1948, and I have put four shots through the same hole at 29 yards with the regular sights. You made a good choice.

And with a scout sight set up it is about the most practical set up there exists. And no your not crazy , I have currently 208 firearms with 2 new(antiques) ones on the way, I have 5 large safes in Calif and a vault in Oregon.I have got rid of anything that I wouldn't/can't shoot! I started collecting when I was 9 or ten and that was almost 1/2 a century ago. I had over 300 at one time but I am giving to 4 son's a firearm each at least for Christmas or a birthday as I get older and cannot use or mainain my collection. I sold very valuable antiques over the years to finance homes, educations, business and other ventures. You see my family in Georgia had , until 1949 when it burnt down, the largest gun collection in the South , and I got a leg up early on! My wife understands that unlike clothing you don't take your guns to good will after a couple years! You don't have to have mechanics fixing them as they depreciate either, well not if you don't buy junk guns! Anyway everybody has a hobby and guns seem a lot less than Golf, boats and other money pits where your investment deteriorates as you have fun,(what the hell, primers and barrels are cheap):neener:
