So when do you stop working toward more accuracy and focus on the reliability of your gun(s)? If you are not a competition shooter, is accuracy more important to you than reliability?

I ask because I have been reading a couple books on accurizing the M1 Garand and am wondering if I should head in this direction or be more concerned for the reliability of the gun rather than spending a lot of time and money to gain maybe a couple inches at 100 yards.

I know some level of accuracy and repeatability is necessary, but where do you put the limit on it for yourself?

Maybe I'm just old school, but reliability is the first priority. Now matter how accurate a load you have, if it doesn't fire when the trigger is pulled, you're better off throwing a rock. Unless the barrel has been shot-out, you should be able to find a load that is both reliable and accurate.

I agree that the ammunition should be reliable first before accuracy is addressed. But I also know that you can load for both accuracy and ensure reliability at the same time.

What about the rifle though? How far would you carry accurizing one? A little, like freeing up the barrel and recrowning the muzzle? Or maybe further by getting a trigger job and smoothing the action?
