Just got a big jug of Accurate #5 in that I'm going to try out for .45 ACP. I load 230gr LRN right at or just a little hotter than GI ball, around 850 or a bit higher, I think. (I don't have a chrono, just making an educated guess from chrono data people have posted for loads similar to what I use) If you've had any experience with Accurate #5 in .45, what weight charge got you to this velocity range? I have load data from Accurate and the Lyman 49th, so I know where to start, but I'd rather not waste my time and components working all the way up to max if I don't have to. For example, the Accurate data shows velocity at max as almost 970fps, way more recoil than I'd want for high-volume shooting.

So just to be clear and prevent any misunderstanding, I am not looking for load data to just start using. I will be starting at published starting charges and incrementally working my way up as you should. I am just seeing if I will be able to stop working up and find my load before I reach max charge.

Thank you.

8.0 ish Grs for lead. 8.5 will get jacketed or plated to 850+. I haven't shot AA #5 with lead in .45ACP.

Last loading I did with AA5 was 8.7 gr in the Ranier 230 plated HP. Haven't shot it yet, but it worked with other 230 leads, and was accurate, so this should be good also. Velocity is very good compared to other powders, and accuracy very acceptable. Good powder for some niche loads; it's still hard to beat Unique & Bullseye across the spectrum, but I will buy more when this jug is empty (assuming I can find it! :cuss: )

I use a lot of AA#5 for .45 acp, 9mm, .380 acp, 5.7x28mm & for 32-20 cowboy action loads, and so far have had no problems. My loads for .45 acp are; for 230 RNL- 7.8gr of AA#5 & 230 FMJ- 8.5gr of AA#5. I shoot both through my Springfield XD & my Kimber TRL Custom II with no problems. LM

I agree with Walkalong. ~8.0gr AA#5 will get you close to 850 fps with a 230gr lead bullet. Actually, the only powder I use in the .45 Auto other than W231 is AA#5 but usually with jacketed bullets.

This is what I got:
