Accurate American designed handgun

There is accuracy, and then there is accuracy.

All the run of the mill combat grade guns are held to acceptable accuracy standard for what they were designed to do.

But no XD or Glock or other of the swarm will hold a candle to the match grade target guns I mentioned earlier.

Some of those guns still hold Bullseye match records set a lot of years ago.

First he says handgun, then he restricts it to self loaders. Now in the silhouette game you are talking about pigeon sized targets at 200 meters for tie breakers. Rules in some classes require box stock except for a trigger job. A Dan Wesson or Freedom Arms revolver well do it not to mention any number of single shots.

Back when I was in practice I could pretty much keep a 357 S&W on a paper plate at 100 yards in a consistent manner. Now I'm too out of practice to attempt that.

I forgot to tell you, I already have a M&P and it is doing better than 3" groups at 25 yards. :D The reason I restrict them to semi-auto is that revolvers and blow backs with their fixed barrels can easily do 1" groups. This is more a curiosity rather than a serious question since I already have a very good semi-auto.

Keep them coming.

I heard Rugers semi-auto have very poor accuracy. More like 4" or 6" at 25 yards. And this is from the Ruger forums.

Smith & Wesson is Walther USA as well.

This is not exactly late breaking news. Walther has contracted with domestic manufacturers for decades. The S&W Models 99 and 990 were essentially rebadged Walther P99s. The M&P is U.S. designed and built.

Les baer, Kimber, Colt, S&W, Kahr, Springfield just to name a few.
Make sure that you know which one of your eyes is the dominant one, and focus on the front sight!!

The most accurate European guns came from shops with careful handfitting. The discontinued SIG P210 is a good example and to have called Korth's facility a factory would have been a joke! When I visited the shop in fall of 2008 there were only two employees present.

The Ruger P95/P89 might meet the criteria, but the P90 was designed to be accurate and both it and the P345 are very capable of meeting your standards. At least mine would.

S&W M&P Fans:

Didn't know that a M&P "Pro" existed. What are the differences between a Pro and a standard M&P?

I'll be honest enough to say I shoot my XD more accurately than I do my P series Ruger (I think this is due more to the ergonomics of the guns than either guns inherent accuracy) but everything I have read is the .45 caliber P-series guns are very accurate. There is a member at Rugerforum.com that swears his late production P-89 is very accurate but he admits it is not the norm.
I'm another one that believes that most quality brand firearms are much more accurate than the vast majority of shooters.

The worst piece of crap Kimber I owned would easily shoot inside three inches; much better if I shot from the bench. Also have a three inch production 1911 variant that does better than three inches. Don't own an XD, but I've fired a few that met the criteria. My BHP makes the cut. Ruger MKII is easily in the hunt. Had a 10 inch Dan Wesson that was more accurate than some rifles.

Was once told by a wise old man if a gun won't shoot, check the shooter, ammo and gun, in that order.

US designed handgun that is accurate?

My Remington XP-100 will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards all day long. As for Amercian-designed, then any of JMB's would qualify.......

But to not include revolvers or other quality firearms is really making this something of a joke

Fremmer,

5" barrel/longer slide
Fiber optic sights
Performance Center tweaks to the trigger.

Hi,

It is surprsing to me that even though USA is the biggest market for handguns, I am yet to find a very accurate handgun designed in USA. I am not an expert in these things, please list any models that you know of even if they are not popular.

The part of your question I've placed in bold is the part of your question that needs to be refined. Once you become a skilled, experienced handgunner, exposed to lots of different types and models of handguns, I'll bet your five-point criteria will evolve dramatically!

Criteria(MUST SATSIFY)

1. Centrefire semi-auto.
2. Equal to or better than 3" groups at 25 yards.
3. Not a custom 1911. Mass produced 1911's are OK.
4. Not a SIG or Glock. Even though they are made here, they were not designed in US.
