Anyone own a powder measure that will accurately meter powders such as Varget and H322? I have a Hornady powder measure that will throw consistent charges with fine powder like 748 or H335 but when it comes to something like Varget the consistency is not there. It seems my new 223 rifles like loads using Varget and H322. With the Hornady measure I am using the powder trickler method, which is taking more time than I care for.

I want to upgrade to a measure that would allow me to throw consistently accurate charges with the above mentioned powders. I know Sinclair sells benchrest powder measures and thought of going to one of the models they sell , although they are extremly pricey!

Any advice appreciated.

Have you looked at the electric measures that dump into (and are controlled by) an electronic scale? Not the fastest things out there but are supposed to be VERY consistent. I too have been putting Varget in 223 using a Redding BR3 measure, which is supposed to be among the best of the "ordinary" measures, but like you I've found that for absolute consistency you have to trickle.

I'm not sure any mechanical measure can compensate for the fact that sometimes you will get grains lined up in a way that requires them to be cut by the drum, and other times they'll just pack in a bit tighter and not have any cut grains. This will necessarily lead to slight differences in density/weight of the charge thrown.

OTOH, sometimes your accuracy load will have a sweet spot of 0.1-0.2g around ideal, such that slight variances in charge don't really affect point of impact, in which case any decent measure will do the job.

I have two diffrent Lyman powder measures that work great.

I use the standard mechanical powder throw for small quantities, and a Lyman DPS1200 for doing anything over 50.

Its about the only thing I have that IS Lyman, but the stuff works great...and the DPS1200 can link up with my laptop and I keep track of loads and such with it...

My Redding 3BR throws Varget extremely accurately. A tenth of a grain or less variation on a 26 grain throw is good enough for me.
